The question to those who want to gut social welfare programs and blame the ills of our deficit crisis on them, who is going to pick up the slack? Who is going to take care of the sick, elderly, and disabled? Who is going to out of work families put food on the table. Who is going to keep people off the streets?

Don't say charities, like those who justify their reasons for leaving the sick and elderly to fend for themselves. They can't carry the burden. They said it themselves:

As the author of the Faith in Public Life article states:

lWhen the experts on charity agree that it's not sufficient to meet the need, lawmakers should stop trying to argue the opposite

ETA: Mods can you fix my title to say "4,000 pastors call on government to protect the poor"? Much appreciated!

The Government has no business trying to help everyone.

This is one of the main reasons so many people need assistance in the first place.

Well, "To promote the general welfare" could be considered the founders mandate to the Federal Government to help the people.

It's a gray area

“Poverty is uncomfortable, as I can testify; but nine times out of ten the best thing that can happen to a young man is to be tossed overboard and compelled to sink or swim for himself.” – Garfield

and what about that seperation between church and state.

find lets have it your way " robbing peter to pay paul doesnt not promote the general welfare"

which weve argued and the general welfare means the well being of the government to function

and not to be cradle to grave entitlements.

So senior citizens, the sick and disabled need government assistance because the government provides it?

How else would they be able to provide for themselves?

Where are these people supposed to get income from?

personal responsibility, plan and prepare do everything and i do mean everything to change their own destinies

then family if family wont work theirs freinds and if you dont have any friends there are alot of non profit organizations and when that dont work theres that word you hate charity.

many ways

poor is a state of mind actions lead to wealth and properity and when all else fails become a congressman

aint no poor congressman

Apprently, we need to re-learn how to take care of our own. The poor, the sick, the elderly in our communities.

When you rely on government for charity, then you are allowing government to define what you are and what you may need.

Everyone knows very well that we the people pay taxes that goes to support those that need the money... Doesn't that means the rich and powerful ? Democracy is on its way out and dog eat dog is what will be taking its place.. as in olden times, the poor will give in order that the rich can never have to break a sweat unless it is to rape little boys and girls...

Seventy-year olds and people who are physically incapable of working should find a way to provide for themselves and cover their medical costs or their families, who are most likely in their own state of poverty should have to find some way to also cover these costs?

is a non-profit going to provide them with a steady income to pay the bills, rent, transportation, and medical bills?

It's mentioned twice in the Constitution sir you should know that.

It's mentioned in different regards also so they both don't mean what you posted.

they have had their whole lives to prepare for their golden years and they have been sold a bill of goods that and all too gladly push their personal responsibility off on the government which means other people since noone paying into social security pays into what they get out of it and takes from other people who arent using it to pay for them.

put people on a life of poverty for the rest of their lives that can be taken away at the whims of any political party in power of the time?

meh i have problems with that.

May I point out President G.W. Bush's infamous "Faith Based" funding program?

If I may. . .
We, as healthy, working adults need to seek out those that need our help. WE need to help those that need food, medicine, shelter. WE need to get of our lazy butts and spend time in our comunities and WE need to stop waiting for government to step in to save the day.
