TA-ATTACKS: Terrorist Bombing Kills At Least 18 In India

During Independence Day celebrations in India, a bomb exploded during a march killing and injuring many people. At least 18 are confirmed dead at this time and no number is available yet on those injured. Many of the victims were schoolchildren and their mothers. Police vehicles were attacked by an enraged mob after the bombing because many blamed the police for allowing the attacks to occur.



Sources inside the police are blaming one of the separatists groups in the area. The United Liberation Front of Assam has been calling for boycotts of all the Independence Day celebrations.

Other attacks have occurred in India recently, on Saturday four people were killed in a cinema by a grenade blast. Later on Saturday a small explosion took place in Dhurbri but there were no reported casualties.

India has been on alert since yesterday for these kinds of attacks. It was feared their independance day would be an opening for bombing in the country. Guess they were right.

The Indian cabinet has said it will scrap a controversial anti-terrorism law enacted by the previous government.

The new Congress-led government says the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) had been grossly misused for the past two years, especially against Muslims.

They also argue that the act has been used to settle political scores.

Pota gave the security forces greater powers to arrest and interrogate terrorist suspects. It will now go to parliament to be repealed.

A bomb has exploded at an Independence Day march in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam, killing at least 18 people and injuring many others.

Police said many of the victims of the blast on a college parade ground in the town of Dhemaji were schoolchildren or their mothers.

Local people incensed at the failure to protect the parade later attacked police vehicles at the scene. Police sources blamed the attack on one of Assam's eight separatist groups.
