If You Don't Agree Just Move Along

When you don't agree with something someone has posted I don't understand why people take the time to argue and insult people and their thoughts. Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to just move along and save the space for someone that has something to add to the conversation?

We aren't all going to agree on everything and having a civil conversation about points we disagree on is much more constructive and interesting then attacking someone personally or insulting their intelligence. I have been guilty of losing my cool and taking cheap shots at people in the past because sometimes it's an automatic self defense mechanism. Now I try to put more rational thought ahead of the the things that I say in these forums and encourage others to do the same.

I don't think anyone enjoys reading a thread where two or more people waste every one's time taking shots at each others intellect.

I guess i have to post a reply that is in concurrence with your sentiment. I agree, no one should argue points against points within a thread. There should be a forum called "hell storm" where all opposing opinions to a thread's OP are rehashed. Wait, but does this also mean people cannot disagree with one another throughout the thread?

We should make a separate forum for that too.



Either way you're gonna at least get sarcasm. I think the best we as individuals can do, while allowing the max amount of freedom on a forum like this, is to use our own judgement when it comes to thread jackers.

Sometimes I think that some people believe there is a war going on in this world, and that ATS is a battle ground. The war the war is the war of ideas, most specifically the war of right and wrong, and good and evil.

These ideologies insist that they be fought for. Not to fight is to surrender. And we know how surrender is treated in modern culture. Not only religions and politics, but sports and business and everything else is pushed by this paradigm of battle.

Would we expect less here at ATS?

This is where i got confused. If you are indeed referring to malicious, non-logical attacks on a person, such as name calling etc. then i can see what you're saying. Nice rant, short and sweet.

I've lost my cool in the recent past, then I was filled with regret for posting a smart-a$$ comment in my response. It was useless, but with it came a lesson, the same lesson you have referenced.

Disagreement is good, senseless character assassination is bad. It adds nothing, and sometimes takes away, from the point you may have been passionately attempting to make.

I try to carry myself in daily life with this simple lesson, but get caught up when I can talk back behind the safety of words on a screen.

It takes a conscious effort to undo the years of "offensively defensive" programming that public schooling instilled within us.

Glad you brought it up.

Usually, if I don't agree, I just move along.

But sometimes, $h1t is so RETARDED that I have to respond!

Or when certain smarty pants on here that everyone seems to idolize spout off their "knowledge" and are TOTALLY WRONG about stuff, well, that just gets my goat.

Yeah, I'm kind of a dick. Can't help it. Sorry. In real life I can just punch people out without having to say anything.
