I believe that a case should be made to decide weather or not there was in fact an intelligent race of humans living at the time of the cavemen.

The notion that there was an advanced civilization before ancient sumer is a new one just now being realized by the mainstream scientists! Take the mysteries surrounding this so-called first civilization.

One: Sumer apparently instantly appeared some 6000 years ago in what is now Iraq. I cannot believe that experts on the subject agree that people became organized and just randomly formed civilization as we now define it.

Two: Sumerian's were highly advanced even for their times. They were experts in mathematics, medicine, farming, astronomy, alchemy, botany, ship building, weaponry, engineering, architecture, and created the first writing system! How could these cavemen have created such concepts without knowing about them before?

Three: Probably the most compelling case for Atlantis lies in Plato's account of the ancient myth. He explained of a highly advanced land far out to the west, which was destroyed because of certain evil things happening in the land. He warned his people that if one were to upset the Gods their blossoming civilization would too be destroyed by a great flood.

Four: Critics for the case point out that while we are just beginning to discover lost civilizations from sunken pieces of the shores of the familiar coastlines there is little evidence to support a highly technological advanced society in ancient times.

Five: If such an advanced civilization lived on the Earth at the time of the cavemen and the dinosaurs before them then that would explain certain ancient mysteries that have conventional scientists scratching their heads today. What sparked human knowledge? Why was there Cro-Magnon and Homo erectus? Who were the many ancient “Gods” that every early civilization worshiped?

The location of Atlantis is also one shrouded in mystery. The west at the time was highly unexplored and thus is the logical place to start looking. This includes parts of Europe, Greenland, Parts of Africa, USA, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America. Other locations purposed are Japan, the Bermuda Triangle and Antarctica.

What do you think? Is this just a crazy theory, or does it have some reasonable points

The many ancient "gods" were more than likely TPTB of the day.
Anyone who collects vast wealth on the backs of their citizens, who become so totally disconnected from their fellow human, who sit in their glass houses (or stone in that day), and who hold themselves up and who actually believe themselves to be GODS.
That's who they were - and it's no coincidence that nearly all ancients texts describe a great flood upon the world, scouring it clean of evil.

I had to write a 20 page paper as one of my final assignments for school and chose to do it on Atlantis. I've looked at every piece of evidence there is available on this society and the conclusion I came up with is that it was probably fictional writing at the time for purposes of demonstrating what authors such as Plato were trying to describe.

Basically it was a way for them to get their point across and it was looslely based on some factual things at the time but was really just a story.

Yea all the threads I have started on this site for the most part are part of a journal that i have written down my thoughts about the world and how it works. I love writing about this stuff. What did you get on your paper?

Your theory is good too, and it would make sense for Plato to have said these things about a fictional Atlantis. After all, the people couldn't have proved that he was right.

Plato was writing about a long gone culture himself. According to his writings Atlantis existed about 7000 years before his time. They were already long gone when he wrote about them.

Indeed, the birth of "advanced" civilization has been pushed back further even within the mainstream.

See these following two sites.

Catal Huyuk

and even further back in time ....

Gobekli Tepe

Göbekli Tepe is the oldest human-made place of worship yet discovered.[5] Until excavations began, a complex on this scale was not thought possible for a community so ancient. The massive sequence of stratification layers suggests several millennia of activity, perhaps reaching back to the Mesolithic. The oldest occupation layer (stratum III) contains monolithic pillars linked by coarsely built walls to form circular or oval structures. Four such buildings have been uncovered, with diameters between 10–30 metres (33–98 ft). Geophysical surveys indicate the existence of 16 additional structures.

Now, if the mainstream folks could only go back another few thousand years and discover Atlantis, they might just start to catch up with us folks here on ATS
