I try to help everyone but I also think if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem. If someone is able to help themselves or contribute but not willing. they are a parasite. Those who want to help but are unable to because of age, illness, or handicap I will share my last crumb of bread with.

Depends on who they are...family who shows up?..well,they're mine..I'll have to make that decision on the spot..especially elderly aunts or such....people who see my gear and say"if anything happens,Im coming to your house"?..well,they also know the scope is set for POI for the end of the street...

Hell No.... If SHTF, the freeloaders will have to pay a price to enter my place.

I am a moral person but am very much a realist....If you don't have anything to contribute then what good are you to me except a liability??
You can never be fully prepared but I have the essentials for a SHTF scenario to insure that my family will have at least a fighting chance. In that circumstance, if you come knocking on my door in need of help you had better have some type of skill, knowledge, connection, or goods worth bartering worth me letting you in.
I have thought about this situation quite a bit and it basically comes down to the fact that my family comes first and everything else is secondary.

The inevitable will be there will be many more freeloaders than loaders. It really will not go to plan for a lot of people who think they have prepared by stashing some bottles of water in the cupboard.

This is a very good topic. A very important an interesting one.

Because dealing with freeloading (i.e., avoiding being a freeloader and avoiding being ripped off) is one of the most important life skills out there. Like most important life skills, nobody teaches you anything about it in school.

Everybody can do something. Give a freeloader a broom! There are always dishes to be done.

Beyond that, it's important to make community rules clear at first so this problem is avoided. Your "survival community" (sounds stupid but I don't know what else to call it) should be basically closed. When "dudes and chicks just drop by and hang out" is when freeloading begins. If enterence into and exit from the community are tightly and fairly regulated, opportunities for freeloading dry up.

One more thing: there are "born freeloaders" who will always have an excuse as to why they can't work yet desere as much as everyone else. These people ruin everything they touch, and they won't change. No amount of rational talk (or even rational talk mixed with phusical force) will get them to change. All you can do is identify the and exclude them, for the good of the rest of the community.

When the shiIT hits the fan we will all become FREE LOADERS

I was thinking about this today. It's ideal if no one knows how well prepared you are, but face it. If your generator is still going a month later people will know. I was in Costco today sniffing around and found some food buckets that claim to have 200 meals in them for $70.00. Now, it's not really ideal food, but it could get you by. I was wondering about buying a few of these buckets as give-aways for nosy neighbors. The idea would be to give them away along with a message about contributing. Obviously no one can feed the whole neighborhood, so if you get a bucket, you owe me. Maybe you're the guy who could go raid the pharmacy for me, or maybe you know a good fishing spot.

Having stuff stored is not going to cut it long-term anyway. Either the supply lines get fixed or we go back to farming and hunting. The idea would be to encourage a barter and trade approach among whoever was left with a view to contributing to the community for everyone's benefit. If anything like that happens the rules on freeloaders change. You won't have to worry about the authorities interfering and an AR-15 can be a good motivator.

I think my perspective may differ because I have no family that I need to take care of. I am sure it would be different if I did.

I do not call turning away from someone because age illness or handicap surviving. I can always refuse to participate at that point and take myself out of the game. I refuse to play the game by those rules.

I don't think freeloading means those kind of people. Freeloading implies otherwise healthy and capable people choosing to not take responsibility and carrying their fair share--the 20 something that refuses to look for a job and plays video games all day long. In a SHTF scenario, survivors cannot sustain or permit that kind of behavior.

You, on the other hand, as a single person with no family, could be a very valuable member of any community you asked to join, and they would be fools not to feed you to gain your energy for the overall good of the group. Rules change in tribes, but only the most destitute in the harshest of conditions refuse to take care of the very young, the every old, and the ill. We've even found Neanderthal skeletons that prove they did the same thing.

our society is full of drama queens, vampires(drug addicts), who believe they contribute nothing and are entitled to everything anybody has.

putting some sense in these crazy people is probably impossible and they would be a huge burden in any disaster.

and have you ever had to work with feral people, that grew up in neighborhoods controlled by gang mentality?
we must have a few million of these want to be gangsters.

only a community that pulls together will have a chance.
and don't waste your medications on drug addicts, they're like demons, the more they get, the more they want.
start by burning down your local methadone clinic.

In that case I would go on playing I guess. My sister is hardcore counter culture so I know quite a bit about being self sufficient.

This is the best post I have read on ATS in weeks.
It is simple and the truth you speak is the same truth I feel.

Definately an interesting thread. But honestly no one knows what they will do until the situation arises, and what they choose to do depends on the type of SHTF scenario that occurs..... there is a big difference between martial law being imposed due to a financial meltdown and a major earth changing solar flare happening.
And, I agree with PartyGirl, anyone who believes they can survive on a few bottles of water stored in the cupboard are being foolish. True survivalists have studied what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and what is necessary to be succesful at it..... but again, success is all relative.

I think if the SHTF these freeloaders will either work ..or be cast out .
Baring that they will simply disappear ( lead poisoning )..If you cant run them off they become ...food !
