A GIANT asteroid heading towards Earth will just miss us in November(November 11th??), Nasa experts predicted last night..

Read more: www.thesun.co.uk...

Could it be that it's going to actually hit earth?Maybe they're letting people know so when you see a huge comet heading are way, you'll think it's okay because NASA said it's going to miss us?

So people who said there isn't a huge "meteorite" on the way can insert apology here!

It just seems like they are telling us now to shut us because they know we can see it now!

Thoughts!

Actually asteroid YU55 is quite real.

It has been discussed here before

It is surprising that elenin is getting all the attention and no one really mentions this one......

Elenin is probably just a psy op cause they know the rea culprit is YU55

we shall see

here is a link for yu55 from jpl / nasa
neo.jpl.nasa.gov...

So what you're saying is that the newspaper company known as the Sun is lying?

Are they allowed to print lies like that?

Near-Earth asteroid 2005 YU55 will pass within 0.85 lunar distances from the Earth on November 8, 2011. The upcoming close approach by this relatively large 400 meter-sized, C-type asteroid presents an excellent opportunity for synergistic ground-based observations including optical, near infrared and radar data.

This is from NASA
neo.jpl.nasa.gov...

It also says:

Although classified as a potentially hazardous object, 2005 YU55 poses no threat of an Earth collision over at least the next 100 years. However, this will be the closest approach to date by an object this large that we know about in advance and an event of this type will not happen again until 2028 when asteroid (153814) 2001 WN5 will pass to within 0.6 lunar distances.

The closest approach to Earth and the Moon will be respectively 0.00217 AU and 0.00160 AU on 2011 November 8 at 23:28 and November 9 at 07:13 UT.

Just as I figured, 2005 YU55. It's actually quite small for an asteroid. To give you a perspective, 2005 YU55 is 400 meters in diameter; the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was 10 km. in diameter; the largest known asteroid in the solar system is close to 1,000 km. in diameter. Furthermore, this has been tracked since 2005, so with the number of observations that have been done the path of it has a very small margin of error. I can say with much confidence that it is no threat.

I thought everyone knew about this. It's been discussed on forums for ages.

Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong The Sun publication. I knew the comet existed but it sounds far fetched. My bad!

they're allowed to print whatever they want...whether it's a lie or an over sensationalized event...

I believe this to be a bit over sensationalized by them just looking at their picture in your link...I mean...they make the damn thing look bigger than earth LOL

It won't hit earth anyways...it comes close (a little bit closer than the moon) and could be viewed with a telescope...but unless something changes it's direction (highly unlikely as asteroids don't just up and change direction out of nowhere) it isn't going to hit

Yes well forget the eye catching illustration!
Basically it's true.
There are already MULTIPLE threads about it on ATS. People should learn to use the search button before coming out with old news.

It's true they do make it look huge don't they.

I just don't understand the motive behind the fear-mongering by the media.

By way of comparison, the asteroid that exploded over Siberia in 1908 was only 50 meters across, This one is 400 meters. The blast was equivalent to 800 Hiroshima atom bombs and completely wiped out a half a million acres . This one is probably more likely to hit the moon . It is coming uncomfortably close to our moon and I have no idea what that would do to the Earth , if anything.

I'm an American but isn't the sun a British tabloid paper? If the rock is coming I pray that NASA's calculations are correct!Yet still that's VERY darn close!

Fail. It's been officially known about since 2005, not just last night. And, the story is old news, from 5th May.
And its November 8th, not 11th.

Did you actually read it?
