What the freaking hell? This is insanity....

Knox deputies raid Bexhill subdivision poker game

Knox County Sheriff's Office deputies raided yet another allegedly illegal gambling operation Wednesday night.

The latest raid targeted a poker game inside a private residence in the Bexhill subdivision in West Knox County, according to a KCSO spokeswoman Ashley Haynes.

Deputies discovered eight people around one poker table at 1304 Buxton Drive, and seized approximately $1,000 cash, Haynes said.

``Illegal gambling operation``... aka ``you are acting too much like free people``... Yeah I never played poker for a thousand $... I'm not a big player... but one of my friends does play small tournaments and he wins more than that once in a while... Private tournaments between regular people... and cops raid those?

CAN'T PEOPLE BE LEFT THE HELL ALONE??? Gambling between consenting adults on your own private property is illegal now?

I bet they raid people like that because THEY CAN'T TAX IT? I remember a story a few years back when someone was killed when a SWAT team raided a house over small time gambling over football between friends... Disgusting cops.... let's raid a bunch of guys for gambling a few hundreds dollars between them... while letting the big banks rob HUNDREDS OF BILLION from the US... GREAT PRIORITIES YOU HAVE THERE...

$1000 between all of them on the table. That's only a $125 buy in. You can't buy in most casinos with that (usually its a min $200.)

They were small time.

Keep up on this story.

I about guarantee it'll lead to asset forfeiture. THAT is why they got busted IMO.

Or didn't get their cut.

Cops are now like the mob... no ``illegal`` gambling... aka ``give us our cut or we raid you and maybe kill one of you to teach you a lesson``...

Cops, the mob, with uniforms.

he's lucky.

they could have killed like they did this deaf 80 year old at his poker game: www.pokeronamac.com...

I've never felt so safe. let's all thank the brave men and women who put themselves in harms way everyday.

Poker is illegal in the USA!

Because you can actually win?

It's legal to invest in the stock market, it's still like gambling... but the government controls who wins and who lose... (you lose every time)

It's legal to invest in government bonds, it's like gambling... but the FED controls the interest rates... so they control who wins and who loses.

America is so messed up... and yep, one of my friends still have thousands of $ stuck in these websites.

Damn thats some #ing bs... Let these online poker site get big and have a lot of money trapped in them and then seize it and all the assets. These poker sites have been around for years they even had commercials on tv, lol it's not like the government just found out about them and shut them down.

Criminalizing normal behavior by perpetually passing new laws is how you restrict freedom, create a police (or nanny) state, and keep it running smoothly. Hitler, Stalin, and Mao would be proud.

I was just reading this earlier.. from the article in the OP..

No arrests were made, but all information was turned over the Knox County District Attorney General's Office for possible charges, she said.
The raid follows at least seven other such operations carried out by KCSO within the past five weeks, targeting underground poker games and businesses operating video poker machines.

So no arrests - at least not yet. I guess it depends on cranky or bored the prosecutor is feeling when these come across his desk. Anyway - this is the 7th one it looks like. So are they that low on funds they need to grab the pots from living room poker games?

Frog- it's not about the pots and/or proceeds from the gambling.

In local cases of gambling raids it is about the seizure of the homes/businesses where the gambling was going on.

Asset forfeiture is a MUCH larger problem than police misconduct- granted it's not as sexy as a video of some knucklehead getting whooped on my another knucklehead but the costs to society are far larger and more ominous.

Ahhhhhh - see I didn't know they could seize the house, etc. From the article the cops just went in, grabbed the pot of cash, took everyone's info and left.

Agreed - grabbing the house is much more serious - and would no doubt generate a ton more funds.

I just didn't think of it in the context of a poker game - but I know it happens. Heck the county where I go hunting small and dirt poor. I don't think the sheriff's dept there has a vehicle they've actually purchased. They are a mis-mash of fast cars (mustangs, camaros, etc) they use for stuff in town and speed traps and big 4x4's for all the stuff out in the sticks.. all ones they've seized for one thing or another. Of course in this same county the feds busted the sheriff, a judge and a bunch of deputies for various things too a few years ago - so go figure.

Technically incorrect. Poker is legal to play in the US. Its just not legal to play for money outside of sanctioned casinos ... depending on which state you are in.

The only federal law was on 2006, when Congress issued the Unlawful Gambling Act. The law was shoe-horned into the SAFE ports act, which did not make playing poker illegal, but made it illegal "gambling businesses" from knowingly taking funds associated with internet gambling, and made it unlawful for banks to knowingly transfer funds to an online gambling site.

Most states have laws against running a gambling business without a license, but its become an interesting court by court battle. Here in my state, Pennsylvania, a home game similar to this was busted, and the judge actually set state precedent by dismissing the case, stating that an individual in his home does not constitute a gambling business and that prohibiting the transfer of personal funds for game wagering was unconstitutional.

As for local
