"Most scientists don’t realize that the budget has been going up and up, and donations have been growing, but the budget for research has been shrinking," said Brian Lichty, a researcher at McMaster University who is looking into treating cancer with viruses that kill tumours. "So they are surprised and disappointed when they find out that this is the case, and the trend."

Cancer Society spends more on fundraising than research

I can't believe I was donating over 200$ a year before. They have a poll in the article:

Will Canadian Cancer Society spending make you stop donating?
Yes 81.1% (781 votes)
No 6.96% (67 votes)
I'm not sure 11.94% (115 votes)

I believe people just woke up.

Sad, but not surprising.

I had a friend that worked with a big Diabetes non-profit for some time and she said the same thing. It was treated more as a for-profit business than a non-profit charity. (It's why she eventually left; she is diabetic and couldn't stand the environment.)

Let's face it. The fastest way to kill the cash cow is to come up with a cure.
