Department of Veterans Affairs Reports 73 Thousand U.S. Gulf War Deaths....

More Gulf War Veterans have died than Vietnam Veterans. This probably is news to you. But the truth has been hidden by a technicality. So here is the truth.

The casualties in the Vietnam War were pretty simple to understand. If a soldier was dead from his combat tour, he was a war casualty. There are 58,195 names recorded on the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC.

The actual figures have been hidden from the American public just like the returning, flag draped coffins were censored from the press. But the figures are now available and we can only hope that the American people will be outraged when they learn how they have been misled.

something odd has happened with the Iraq War. The government, under the Bush administration, did something dishonest that resulted in a lie that's persisted since the war began -- and continues to this very day. They decided to report the war deaths in Iraq only if the soldier died with his boots on the ground in a combat situation.

According to The Department of Veterans Affairs, as of May 2007, reports in the Gulf War Veterans Information System reveal these startling numbers:

Total U.S. Military Gulf War Deaths: 73,846
* Deaths amongst Deployed: 17,847
* Deaths amongst Non-Deployed: 55,999

The stastics for non-lethal injuries are likewise staggering:

Total "Undiagnosed Illness" (UDX) claims: 14,874
Total number of disability claims filed: 1,620,906
* Disability Claims amongst Deployed: 407,911
* Disability Claims amongst Non-Deployed: 1,212,995

Percentage of combat troops that filed Disability Claims 36%

I know you probably will think this is another conspiracy theory -- I did when I first heard about this -- so please read the original report for yourself.

I want to say a big THANK YOU to all the vets who put their country and its people before themselves. We are proud of you and believe that you put your lives on the line for something a little better than what we are currently experiencing with our government. Thanks to you we're still a democracy. So it's up to us, the people you fought for, to make your effort worthwhile.

I read some time back about how they had changed the methods of counting casualties in war. I wish I could find the original article but am unable to.

To use an example, if there were two casualties from an IED attack and one of them died on the spot and the other got medevaced to Germany where they later died the total number of combat deaths would be counted as one and not two. Nothing like backwards-engineering statistics to achieve a favorable result. 1 + 1 = 1, just like in school...not!

Thanks OP for bringing this matter up. I'll gladly add my thanks to the troops as well.

I read somewhere the actual number of Americans who died in the Southeast Asian war theatre was more like 75,000, including all the advisers, contractors, and mercenaries. So even the larger casualty figures for Iraq/Afghanistan could be low.

I think if you dig deeper, you might find these figures are in relationship to the Persian Gulf War. The deaths have resulted over the years since that war. Some due to poisonings, wounds that lingered. etc. I could be wrong, though. I just read the report in the second link of the OP. Well, glanced over it. I read it a few years ago. The first link got me a no longer available message.

For sure, though, expect in the next 20 years or so for skyrocketing vet deaths from these current wars.

I don't think hacking systems is gonna stop the war.

This calls for people writing their congressman or post outside of public places with signs etc.

I think the headline is a bit of sensationalism. The first report gives a link not found. The second report is about the first gulf war ERA veterans, including all veterans that were NOT deployed to the Iraqi Theater.

To find that 73000 people died out a population of 6.5 million is not terribly surprising.

The Gulf War Veterans Information System (GWVIS) provides the best available current data
identifying the 6.5 million Gulf War service member population. The GWVIS reports monitor, in part,
the service members’ use of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare and disability benefits.

Every three months, the DoD sends VBA an updated list identifying all current and prior military
service members since the start of the Gulf War on August 2, 1990.

5. GWVIS reports do not distinguish between a veteran and a “civilian veteran.” Some veterans
counted in the GWVIS report may currently be on active duty due to re-enlistment to active duty or
due to activation from the Reserve Forces to active duty. In contrast, “civilian veterans,” as defined
by the Census Bureau and in VA’s official counts, are those no longer on active duty.

6. The GWVIS report differs from existing VBA Reports Control Symbol (RCS) and Computer Output
Identification Number (COIN) reports. The GWVIS report identifies all veterans with military
service on or after August 2, 1990. In contrast, the COIN and RCS reports sort veterans into only
one period of military service, such as Vietnam Era, Peacetime, or Gulf War. COIN and RCS
reports contain lower counts of Gulf War veterans because some veterans of the Gulf War period
who served prior to August 1990 have multiple periods of military service. These veterans may be
counted in the COIN and RCS reports under another period of military service.

I wish I could embed the table that shows the different categories of veteran, but out of ~74000 veteran deaths SINCE 1990, ~55000 of them we of military personnel that WERE NEVER DEPLOYED TO THE IRAQI THEATER!
