It depends on the sunscreen. If you bothered to read the article it is sunscreens which contain vitamin A which are problematic.

"Almost half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A or its derivatives, according to an evaluation of those products released today."

ya thats almost half of them, whats your point?

The FDA has issued new regulations. Perhaps that's why Kevin jumped on the bandwagon.

Here are some of the what the FDA tells you to do on the site listed:

* Use sunscreens with broad spectrum SPF values of 15 or higher regularly and as directed.
* Reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, more often if you’re sweating or jumping in and out of the water.

Sorry couldnt find anything about the Vitamin A or about sunscreen causing cancer at all, its just basically some label specifications and more of the "put on as much of it as you can!!!" nonsense

and what do you mean Kevin jumped on the Band wagon, like i mentioned Kevin Trudeau said that sunscreen caused cancer years ago!!!

Years ago. Right. Like when he said this:

This is one of the greatest frauds in history. The sun does not cause cancer. Sun block has been shown to cause cancer. The ingredients in sun block are now strongly believed to be the number one cause of skin cancer. There is no skin cancer in Africa. People stay in the sun all day long with no sunscreen. It is not the pigment in the skin, as some suggest. People of African heritage living in America have the highest rate of skin cancer, and they stay in the sun the least.

Trudeau lies.
It has never been shown that sunscreen causes cancer, it was shown that vitamin A accelerates the growth of existing tumors and lesions.

African Americans do not have the highest rate of skin cancer. Whites have greater rates by far.
seer.cancer.gov...

Skin pigmentation has a great effect on the occurrence of skin cancer.

This study has clearly demonstrated that the intensity of skin pigmentation is inversely related to melanoma incidence. This provides strong support for the 2 hypotheses that UV radiation is a major cause of malignant melanoma and that melanin pigmentation protects against this. Additional research is required to elucidate the aetiology of those tumours occurring on the soles of the feet principally among Africans, but also among Asians.

Adults who use sunscreen daily can drastically reduce their risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, according to new landmark research from Australia. Researchers found that daily application of an SPF 16 sunscreen to the head, neck, arms, and hands reduced melanoma incidence by half in study participants.

Not baking and exposing is one way to help the more fair. You can protect quiet a bit with hats and clothes. Now if you are raging white and plan to walk around Disney all day with your raging white family, an application of sunscreen for that vacation might be worth the chemical exposure.

I find it hard to sunburn down here in Florida because honestly it is just too hot for me to stand exposed to the sun long enough to burn, and I am quite fair skinned. I don't beach go during prime sun - or lay out anymore - meaning I don't try and tan either I just do my business as normal and don't stay in direct sunlight during peak hours.

The worst burn of my life I got in like 20 minutes in Colorado. So that altitude and low humidity played a trick and burnt me to a crisp, Owch!

By the way, the use of Coconut oil both external and internal has helped me in many ways. We talk about food, but your skin is the biggest organ you have - you want to put pure simple things on it, much as you want to eat things that aren't overly processed and watch the sugar. Just a personal experience I thought I'd share.

ohh wow ur serious,

ok let me try to get this through your head, "ALMOST HALF OF THE 500 MOST USED!!!!"

if you fail to understand this again then i say you have an interesting comprehension challenge in this life and i bid you good luck in overcoming it

also in regards to your links, first of all obviously there are going to be "studies" claiming what you show, they have been around for years and they help the pharmecueticals expand their profits generously, thats not the topic

the issue is this new study, which the FDA is covering up, but cant because the documents where there, they are purposefully trying to hide this

"The scientists acknowledge that the study was relatively small and needs to be reinforced by further research."
www.skincancer.org...

Kevin Trudeau claimed it and now its in the mainstream, thats the fact!

It was in the news recently about women's makeup containing many cancer causing ingredients, and this is one area that is poorly regulated. Our skin is very absorbent, we should be more careful what we put on it, whether makeup, lotion, or sunscreen.

www.dailynewstranscript.com...

Beyond nail polish and hair dye, everyone is using soap, shampoo, moisturizers or sunscreen. Shockingly, the beauty industry is woefully unregulated, yet masked by slick advertising and consumers' insecurities. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration website says, "Cosmetic products and ingredients are not subject to FDA premarket approval authority, with the exception of color additives." It also states, "Cosmetic firms are responsible for substantiating the safety of their products and ingredients before marketing." Cosmetic industry trade organizations have lobbied to make sure that the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act laws for their industry have not changed much since 1938.

The Cosmetic Industry is self-policing its products.

There is a growing use of nanoparticles in sunscreens, moisturizers, makeup and other products, and because they are microscopic they can be much more readily absorbed. However, the research on them is inconclusive, with concerns including cancer, bioaccumulation and gene damage. Ingredients also include endocrine disruptors, which studies have shown are linked to reproductive disorders and cancer.

Lack of Vitamin D from blocking out natural sunlight is only one of the problems.
Vitamin A accelerating existing problems is also an issue.
The toxicity of some of the other chemicals in many of these lotions (and almost all makeup) is a huge deal.
When people are out under hot sun, and sweating, our pores are opening up and letting even more of the toxins through

You seem to be missing the point. It is vitamin A which is related to accelerated development of skin cancer. In light of that information it would be a good idea to avoid sunscreens which contain vitamin A and to stay out of the sun if you use any cremes which contain them.

One reason for the "cover up" was that the report had not yet undergone peer review. Once it has the FDA will probably take notice.

An interesting point in the context of this thread: The experiment did not use a cream with any sunscreen ingredients. It was a test of the effects of retinoid cremes only.

Another interesting find. The use of the control creme alone (with no retinoids) increased cancer rates.
ntp.niehs.nih.gov...

Kevin Trudeau lied about sunscreen. When this study appeared he jumped on it to bolster his initial lies. Sunscreen does not cause cancer. Sunscreens which contain retinoids may do so.

Lie:

This is one of the greatest frauds in history. The sun does not cause cancer. Sun block has been shown to cause cancer. The ingredients in sun block are now strongly believed to be the number one cause of skin cancer.
The Sun does cause cancer. The test mice got cancer after being exposed to sunlight. Show me a study which shows sunscreen ingredients causing cancer with no sunlight.

Lie:

There is no skin cancer in Africa. People stay in the sun all day long with no sunscreen.
There is skin cancer in Africa.

For example, the highest rates of skin cancer are found in South Africa and Australia, areas that receive high amounts of UV radiation.

www.genome.gov...

Lie:

It is not the pigment in the skin, as some suggest.
It is skin pigmentation which reduces cancer rates in those with dark skin.

This study has clearly demonstrated that the intensity of skin pigmentation is inversely related to melanoma incidence. This provides strong support for the 2 hypotheses that UV radiation is a major cause of malignant melanoma and that melanin pigmentation protects against this. Additional research is required to elucidate the aetiology of those tumours occurring on the soles of the feet principally among Africans, but also among Asians.

www.ciesin.org...

Lie:

People of African heritage living in America have the highest rate of skin cancer

African Americans have the lowest rate of skin cancer.
seer.cancer.gov...

And then there's this:

, and they stay in the sun the least.

I'd like to see his source for that claim. It is because he thinks they just sit around on the back porch singing spirituals all day? Not only does he lie, he seems to be racist.

It's been a long time since I've read something here on ATS that set off my BS meter more than that. How can you honestly say nothing natural is dangerous? That's flat out ridiculous.

As far as the sun screen issue, I don't really have an opinion. I am very fair skinned, and I never use sun screen personally, just because I don't often sit out in the sun long enough to burn.

I do take issue with the various studies that are used. There is a simple, true, statement that people seem to constantly ignore: "correlation does not imply causation"

The sun CAN cause cancer. I don't know why people are arguing against this. It can damage your DNA, this is a fact, so saying we don't need to worry about the sun damaging our skin is a dangerous lie.

The most logical correlation between sun screen and skin damage seems to be, that if you think you are protected, you will stay out in the sun longer than you normally would, and therefore receive more damage from the sun.

People just need to be reasonable, get some sun, but not too much.

I never used suncream .
And a good way to avoid sunburned if your a blue eyed blond or redhead is simple. We are not made to stay in the sun for a long period of time.

1- The closer from the equador the less you can sunbath, most tourists need to understand this one.

2- Look at the U/V factor on the weather channel.
3- Drink water, a tremendous amount of it.
4- Like someone allready mentioned, eat tomatoes.
5- To prevent direct sunlight, use clothing and hats.
6- Like i said, blonds or reds cant stay in a bathsuit on the beach for like 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. It is ridiculous to think you can outsmart one of strongest element in life. Even with sunblock cream
7- If you job is to work under direct sunlight for extra long period of time you'll need hat, glasses and maybe sunscreen but dont use the banana boat one. lol

Use your head instead, you dont need to use suncreams and you dont need to stay away from the sun. 4 hours of direct sunlight over 3 days out of a week and your ok, with a perfect tan, energized for 2 weeks.

I know most of the people dont care because they want to look attractive over their health. Just take a look at those teenagers getting tanned inside a canister. It is soo important to realised how cultural /social "beauty" is. Then most will understand how to extract the most vitamins out of our star more efficiently.

This has been studied for some time actually. We havnt used sunblock/sunscreen for some time. Not to mention the terrible chemicals found in them, and this caused a link to cancer, the UV B is what you need. UV B is absolutely essential to human health. UV A can cause cancer. They typically block UV B. And getting the whole spectrum doesnt seem to hurt you, unless you've gotten significant burns, because the B works!!!! You need the sun, not to block it. Its crucial, it also increases your pineal. Try to tilt your head up, to the side, and let in the corners of your eyes for 10 minutes a day. Though at dawn or dusk with no UV, you can stare at it. The rest of the time, the corners of the eye work well, and avoid the midday time. When you need to cover up, cover up, not with sunscreen.

They did study on outdoor workers, here in BC, by the Cancer Institute, expecting to find increases in cancer. Instead they found a significant reverse result.

Sungazing For Mind/Body/Soul Safely!

There are a lot of links to research here.

Oddly enough, skin cancer often starts in areas you don't get exposure, like between your toes. Possibly the result of their use of poisonous sprays something you're walking on.

in the end there is constantly going to be studies to quote on both sides but the fact remains,

millions and millions are on the line for sunscreen companies if this was true, of course they would use vast resources to solidify their positions

just like there are going to be people who constantly look for any little thing to blame on the large corporations

but this fact remains, the FDA will bash and take off the market something that is natural just because there have been no conclusive tests done to determine their safety, even when there are little or no known complaints about it, they will use any little nuaince to discredit natural remedies, even unfounded ones, but when a money maker like sunscreen is at risk, they dont even warn the public of what might be going on

they hide it and never speak about it,

well this time they got caught!

The FDA goes after products which are sold by making claims without the science to back those claims up. When products are found to be dangerous they are removed from the market.
They got "caught" at nothing. The report was not published because it had not completed peer review.

No comment about Trudeau's lies?

In fairness, it is impossible to not see that the FDA has a double standard when it comes to what can/cannot be sold. If something natural can "cure" something, the FDA won't allow it to be sold because it is not backed by science (as you say).

That being said, if a huge money making industry comes out with a product that has side effects, such as causing cancer or headaches or what have you, and these side effects has been proven by science, the FDA will still allow for their consumption.

So while the FDA may be right in not allowing something that has not been proven by science (even if certain natural cures have been proven viable by science but the science is withheld), they are using a complete double standard by allowing a product that has been proven by the same science they rely upon to keep natural remedies off the market to be harmful.

If "science" and proof that a product was harmful in any way were used as the basis of all decisions the FDA made, I guarantee every single drug out there would be banned because they all have side effects (however minor in some) while natural "cures", if given the time and financial backing to be researched by science, would be cleared as unharmful and actually good for humans in some cases.

There are dozens of natural products that you can buy. If it isn't shown to be harmful and if the claim (unsupported) isn't made that it has health benefits, the FDA doesn't regulate it.

The FDA has pulled many products by "big pharma" off the market. Many of which were beneficial but had side effects which were too dangerous.

The big mistake man has made is thinking that we need man to make our bodies live on a planet we were raised and groomed on. Natives around the world suffer no such diseases.

Pouring chemicals on skin to protect from the sun. How ridiculous. Hey people! for millions of years beings have lived under the sun but they usually covered themselves. Getting a sunburn leads to burnt skin having chemicals soak into the burn an altering the bodies natural defenses is just asking for trouble.

Be natural is all I can say. Live like a native, like the way we have been before the last 500 years.
