what laws make the selling of chemicals in tobacco legal?

if im not mistaken any other product or industry selling dangerous chemicals for consumption would probably be baned, seeing the owners fined and so on..
why is it and what specific laws make it legal to sell such dangerous chemicals in cigarettes?
are there any laws that say its ok, and would it be ok for me to sell..lets say 'lollipops' filled with the same chemicals (maybe not something so directed to children but you know what i mean)

i find it all a bit strange
guess tax money can do that

Yes I would like to know more about this too. I do smoke, and I often wonder why they cannot make cigarettes with safer chemicals rather than the lethal ones. I know I probably sound hypocritical, but I don't understand how it's justified that in one sentence you can put all of these chemicals in cigarettes and make billions in profit worldwide, yet a substance such as the "not for human consumption" drugs recently in the UK are banned almost immediately.

Just to give a bit of history here - in the 1960s - government and tobacco control groups demanded that cigarette companies reduce the amount of tar and nicotene in cigarettes in the hopes of reducing lung cancer.

Cigarettes used to contain about 12 mg of nicotene but tobacco companies agreed to reduce that to about the 1 -2 mg range of today's cigarettes. Consumers complained that the cigarettes had no "taste". As a result, tobacco companies started adding things like sugar, rum, molasses etc.

In Canada - it has been illegal to put any additive in tobacco for the last 15 -20 years.

Unless this post refers to chemicals like formaldehyde, metals etc - these chemicals are all the by-products of combustion and are not "added" to tobacco at all.

Actually the way the legal system works - at least in the US and I think the UK is that anything not specifically banned is legal - so if its legal they just haven't gotten around to passing a law against it or some activist judge has not set a precedent ....yet.

You are absolutely right .... it is sickening what chemicals are prescribed to you when buying cigarettes.

I smoke rarely now but would like to recomend a product which uses no added extras , just the pure tobacco.

The tobacco i buy is called " American Spirit "

This tobacco has no additives and is just pure tobacco.

I cant recomend this stuff enough... over standard ciggies or rolling tocacco.

They actually pay double the amount in production just to make everything chemical free and organic.

A real treat when you are used to the chemical-packed ciggs or rollies elsewhere.

I didn't know that. So since Canada stopped using addictive things in cigarettes, has it had an impact on smokers?

You still inhale harmful, possibly carcinogenic, compounds no matter how organic they say they are. In fact, it even says on the American Spirit website

"no additives in our tobacco does NOT mean a safer cigarette."

US and German researchers have also found significant levels of toxic chemicals even in additive free, organic cigarettes

The last one you mentioned, the 2000 chemicals in the tobacco are NOT the products of this. We had brochures IN THE DOCTORS OFFICES that really demonized smokes, and why some of those chemicals were deliberately added, such as battery acid: all had to do with increasing the delivery of Nicotine to the brain faster. Added by intent.

Also, the fertilizers used to grow the tobacco are radioctive. Cigarettes in the US anyway, are radiactive and a pack a day for a year is like having 200-600 chest xrays a year.

No - they claim that smoking kills just as many people in Canada as anywhere else. Actually - these deaths are theoretical deaths. They are all calculated by a computer called SAMMEC at the CDC in Atlanta. Canada just takes 10 % whatever number is calculated for the states and publishes those theoretical deaths as actual deaths.

Personally, I find I like Canadian cigarettes better than american because most american cigarettes have some kind of sugar added to them that makes the smoke sweeter.

You are mistaken - battery acid is not added to tobacco. Go to the Reynolds website and you will be provided with a list of all ingredients.

Then simply google "by-products of combustion" and you will find your "battery acid" (I presume you mean sulphuric acid?).

Someone listed the laws before it had something to do with making cigarettes that wouldn't burn a house down when dropped by a sleeping smoker or something like that. I wish I could remember the thread it was on there's a lot of real good information on that. Natural tobacco only has nicotine BTW, none of the other stuff that actually causes cancer.

The radiation in tobacco smoke is caused by using organo-phosphate fertilizers. However, the radiation in the smoke never rises above the background levels of radiation naturally present in the environment. The question has already been studied extensively. Don't you think if it was that easy to make tobacco "safe" for use that the tobacco companies wouldn't have already found another option.

Further, the use of organo-phosphate fertilizers is widespread in the food supply. If the radiation was capable of causing cancer - don't you think everyone would have cancer?

Not sure, and it's a good question. My only answer is the same law that allows fluoride to be put in water or mercury to be put in vaccines (in other words TPTB law)

Electronic cigarettes have none of these compounds and since it doesn't burn it has none of the combustion by products as soon as my rich uncle comes out of the poorhouse I am switching to electronic cigs. At 100 plus dollars for one with 2 filler packs (nicotine delivery system) it is more than I probably spend on cigarettes now, especially the way I lose crap. Lol.
