Today, President Bush named Rep. Goss (R-FL) the new director of the CIA to fill the hole left by George Tenet's resignation. The President confirmed his appointment this morning during a speech in the Rose Garden. Goss has been the leading candidate for the position for quite some time.

WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday will nominate as CIA director Rep. Porter Goss, a Florida Republican and head of the House Intelligence Committee, a senior administration official said.

The official said Bush would make the announcement in a morning Rose Garden ceremony before leaving on a multistate re-election campaign trip.

Goss had been considered the leading candidate after George Tenet resigned as CIA chief on July 11. The CIA currently is being run by an acting director.

Along with this announcement, several other executive orders by President Bush are expected to be issued in the coming days. All dealing with security and compliance with the 9/11 commission's reccomendations.

Background info on Porter Goss:

1960: Graduated yale with honors (degree recieved to be edited in later).

?: Served 2 years in US Army Intelligence. (early 1960-late 1961?)

1961: Served in CIA Covert ops in Latin America, Carribean, and Europe. (possible operations involved in to be edited in later)

1971: Left the CIA because of an injury, moved to Sannibel, FL where he started a news paper along with 2 other former CIA operatives.

1974: Was key player in the incorporation of Sannibel. He served on the city council for almost every year until 1982, as well as serving 4 terms (1 year) as mayor.

1982: Democratic Governor of Florida selects Republican Porter Goss to fill spot on Lee County Commission (previously plagued by scandal). (nature of scandal to be edited in later).
1985: Became chairman of the commission.

1988: Elected to congress with 72% of the vote- his lowest numbers ever. He has served ever since, and ran unopposed in 90, 94, and 98. (circumstances to be edited in later).

2003: Authored Patriot Act II.

2004: Served on the 9/11 Commission along with the Former Flordia Governor who appointed him to his first county-level position. (Bob Graham). He then, after being chewed out by Dick Cheney (seen by some as having undue control over Goss), he asked the Justice Department to have the FBI investigate leaks in the 9/11 commission- bypassing the ability of congress to conduct its own investigation and argueably violating the spirit of separation of powers.

More to follow in later edit.
