Always sad to see an icon go.

I never really got into Columbo but always thought of him as a precurser to Monk.

But Columbo definetly goes down as one of the most well known police characters in television.

Peter Falk Dies...yahoo.com

In a court document filed in December 2008, Falk's daughter Catherine Falk said he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

I just read about this and rushed over to see if anyone had posted.

I always felt that Columbo was the greatest "cop" show ever. No car chases/crashes, no shootouts, just good solid detective work. I feel like I could write a book on the show. I've watched all the episodes many times. You'll notice that he zeroed in on the suspect the same way each time. He looked for 3 things; motive, means, and opportunity. He focused on small inconsitencies until each and every one could be adequately explained, and finally, he tripped up the suspect to either get them to confess or produced an ironclad case they could not escape from.

Off the top of my head, some of my favorite episodes:

The one where Jack Cassidy played a magician. Colubo caught him by using the typewriter ribbon to reproduce the damaging document.

The one where Dick Van Dyke played a photographer. Columbo tricked him into picking out a particular camera from several in evidence lockup.

The one where William Shatner was a cop show host. He wiped his prints of the gun, but not the bullets.

The one where Dabney Coleman was a lawyer. He set up an alibi by having his assistant get a ticket from a speeding camera wearing a mask. Columbo caught him by realizing that the mask in the photo had no shadow under the nose.

My all time favorite was where a couple of college kids killed their professor by setting up a remote controlled gun in their truck. When the professor was shot, the kids were in a class being taught by Columbo. What better alibi could you have? Still, he nailed them.

Well, hopefully now we can get a DVD set with the complete Columbo. There were so many, it will be huge, and expensive.

I also liked him in several movies, notably The Princess Bride.

RIP Mr. Falk. I had always hoped for one more Columbo movie. You will be missed.

Oh, and, uh ... one more thing ...

Someone else who loved the ol Guy. The Dick V.D one was probably my favorite. Thank you for adding your post. I'd read a while back our man Colombo was walking the streets in LA acting whacked out. I guess I have to be glad he's out of his misery but he truly belonged right on top - and always will be in my heart.

Thank you again to you and the OP.

Gawd this made me cry...

peace

Definetly one of the best cop shows!
Always remember watching the episodes when I was younger. Haven't seen any in a few years though, but fond memories of sitting in front of the telly on a cold winter night watching Columbo do his stuff..

Peter Falk was a great actor and I don't think anyone else could have made that character what it was.

I came here to see if anyone had put a thread up on his passing.

Thank you for doing so. Another great Legend is gone.

Silo13, I watched the video you put up and smiled at the great memories. Columbo was epic. I remember having to wait a week to see a new episode, wondering what he would come up with next !! He will be missed...

Oh...and hmmm...one more thing...

RIP Peter Falk !

I always enjoyed Columbo...Peter Falk was a very talented character actor. I always enjoyed listening to him and watching him no matter what he was in.

The wonderful thing about actors and actresses that pass away....they leave to the world a treasure trove of their work...we are still able to see and enjoy them...remember them.

So true! It's about as close to immortality as you can get these days.

I've been checking the TV listings, if some TV station doesn't start showing a Columbo marathon soon I'm going to have to start writing letters.
