Is Atheism a Religion?
Atheism
Atheism: The Stupidest Religion of All
Is Atheism a Bona Fide Religion?
Is Atheism Just a New Religion?
Atheism is NOT a Religion

Yeah, I guess we did need one more thread on this.

Atheism is a religion like bald is a hairstyle.
Atheism is a religion like clear is a color
Atheism is a religion like blind is an eye color

Atheism is NOT a religion

It'll pop up again and again ...just as intelligent design, quantum-religion and amateur-diagnosing of theist-opponents as mentally ill.

I sometimes have the suspicion, that there's a manual for that kind of stuff somewhere.

Except for the part of you calling my OP feces I pretty much respect your breakdown.

I'll admit I might have overgeneralized and I should have thought of that a lot of people here on ATS are much more well educated about the matter.

Then again, I'm almost certain that you know people that fit the profile I presented. I know I do.

Finally, you might be right about the Sagan quote, I remember hearing it and was quite sure it was him, but I couldn't find it online either.

Edit: I found the quote, it was "An atheist has to know a lot more then I know."

Some? I'd say there are very few and the majority of those that you would refer to as fitting that bill probably don't. I know for certain that not a single modern "famous" atheist fits the bill, and only possibly the most ignorant rest of us do.

As for Sagan, he may not have self-identified as an atheist, but all of his other words and books spoke to him not believing in any deity, making him an atheist either way.

Atheism is not a religion. Atheism is not ALWAYS faith. Atheists don't have commandments to follow, although individual atheists may believe in such objectivism.

There shouldn't even be a "label" for someone with a lack of belief. There are no declared "Aunicornists", "Aleprauchaunists" and there's no "ASantaClausists."

Atheism is not ALWAYS a polar opposite. For example, an eskimo may never heard of such theories, or such concepts as "religion" or even "GOD", yet still - the eskimo is an atheist (having a lack of belief).

I think it's about time this stereotyping techique is dismantled.

Individual Atheist's beliefs may differ; there's nothing to stop an Atheist from being "spiritual". There's nothing to stop an Atheist from being "pro-life" - There's nothing to stop an Atheist from supporting religion....Although many i have met are against it.
