Maybe there are people who just want to understand reality better.
The human mind is crippled in its ability to determine what's real. Not always, but definitely with enough regularity that a site like this one is
able to attract and retain the traffic that it does. If the human mind was capable of dependable translation of incoming data, we'd all understand the
world the same, and there'd only be issues of honesty and integrity when addressing conflict. We all know that this isn't the case, and that one
person's true is not necessarily true for the next person. This is the nature of human consciousness, and since this is how we each experience
reality, it seems appropriate that someone should be examining the physical nature of human consciousness for clues as to why it can vary so
profoundly from one person to the next.
The reason why some might take such research and use it in a corrupt manner is because only the private sector does research anymore, and only
research that will turn a profit (or that will bring in government contract dollars) is funded anymore. Focusing on turning a profit has always
corrupted the nature of research, artificially narrowing the scope of potential revelation in the endless drive for dichotomous efficiency by
corporate bureaucracies that long ago supplanted the government's primacy involving stultifying layers of Kafkaesque banality.
Someone will probably invent a nasal spray that will give you a night on the town (dinner, movie, get laid) while you sit in chair at home, with your
family buzzed out on whatever other offerings SONY will have in their nasal spray catalogue. Rest assured that the only thing you'll surrender if this
research ever pans out for the folks funding it is years of your life to meaningless escapism. Not that this is much of a loss for most
people.
