The U.S. National Security Agency declassified a 202 year-old file today titled Cryptology: Instruction Book on the Art of Secret Writing. The NSA said the release was realization of Barack Obama’s “Memorandum on Transparency and Open Government.” (And, certainly, the declassification was unquestionably progressive in its championship of transparency at the risk of alienating key allies such as Prussia, Siam or the Ottoman Empire.)
