Here's my thought on the subject,

Face recognition is perhaps the most developed visual perceptual skill we humans have and plays a critical role in social interactions. Coupled with the fact that the human face has more muscle variations than any other body part we are able to express (and recognize) an almost endless array of facial expressions.

When we look at our self in the mirror we automatically tone certain face muscles which give it a natural lift. Because we can see our own face when we look in the mirror we can apply the needed muscle tension to get the result we desire.

When somebody is taking a photo of you, you have to guess the amount of muscle tension needed which usually turns out pretty.......well....bad.
