I asked this question in an earlier thread, but I feel it warrants a thread where it can be discussed in full without going off-topic.

Why are westerners so morbidly obsessed with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Why should we care what happens in a country we don’t live in, or have a connection to?

I personally see no point in caring about the conflict. The land has little material wealth or strategic importance, and I don’t really care about violation of supposed ‘Human rights', or the well-being of foreigners that have little to no relation to me, my heritage, my nation, or my culture.

So, do you care about the conflict? And if you do, why?

Well

first

israel is an illegal nation on occupied land seized through violence

not much different than what americans did to indians

i care for many reasons

one

i care when some one innocent is harmed or killed

more so when the one doing the hurting is a state or government

two

i believe israel to be an aggressor state world wide

the uss liberty ring a bell

I care about it because the Palestinians are Muslim. Bad things happen to them, and the other Muslims in the region (aka pretty much the rest of the Middle East) get upset. War breaks out, and oil prices skyrocket or oil shipments stop altogether.

Well i guess you should care because Israel is an Ally of America, We should care about the amount of blood shed that goes on in any region.

They need our money just as much as we need their oil. Their nations would become even poorer if they quit shipping it.

Both countries have nuclear weapons. If they didn't have a moderator (the US) they could start World War III. IMO, at least.

I care because I care about human beings no matter where they live.

It matters to me that innocent people are being slaughtered on both sides of the wall.

It matters to me that most nationalistic, self-important people turn a blind eye to what is happening in other countries when they have the power to urge their own governments to be impartial and stop supporting violent regimes, again, no matter where they are in the world.

I am a human being, one member of this Human family that occupies the earth. It is a dangerous road to have no compassion for others except yourself and your immediate family. The way I see things is if we don't all row this boat together, for the betterment of all people, then we will all sink together anyway.

That is why I care.

Odd man out here, but Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. They actually create things of value, and contribute to the rest of humanity (unlike most of the Middle East). They share our values and respect of human life and children.

It is morally correct to support a like minded nation that is held to a ridiculous level of accountability by the rest of the world. They are surrounded by racist goon nations that hate the US along with them. Why wouldn't we support them?

Sometimes taking the morally correct path is more difficult than trolling for oil and selling our a nation (as per Russia, as an example).

people care because theyre told to.

not one person who lives outside of these countrys has any idea, they read crap on websites listen to the news and then form an opinion around it.

its an ego argument, they get off on sticking up for such n such.
that and they probably sit around and knowing full well that most people dont know/care about the issue but they know its still a massive mainstream issue... then they start talking their garbage to make themselves look intelligent and cultured. they just come off as jerks.

Maybe im wrong but Palastine held elections, they voted in Hamas in Gaza and everyone got pissed off about it. But doesnt that still leave Abbas as the elected head of the West Bank? Seems to me they are a democracy to, i believe you can throw Iraq in that basket as well. Just because Isreal doesnt like who wins these elections doesnt make them any less democratic.

True, however, they also danced and cheered when 3,000 of your countrymen were killed (great sign of character), they voted in a party that swears to driving Jews into the sea, and they think its heroic to blow their kids up (cause you are going to have a sex orgy in heaven..whoohoo!). There is more to a nation than sham elections. You have to look at the ethics, belief system and values of the people.

I am guessing you use the term deocracy lossely. Ask, women, gays, and non-muslims if they feel they are living in a democracy in Palastine or anywhere else in the Middle East.
