Doctors asked to identify potential terrorists under government plans

www.guardian.co.uk

Doctors and other health professionals will be asked to identify people who are "vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism" as part of the government's redrawn counter-terrorism programme to be detailed on Tuesday.

She said: "Doctors cannot look into the future and say how someone might behave This would threaten the trust of the doctor and … patient relationship.A doctor's role is to treat the patient in front of them, not predict how the patient will behave in future."

This sounds a little like McCarthyism. What evidence can a doctor provide that will determine you will definitely commit a terrorist act?

There are a lot of wack-job doctors out there too. I wouldn't trust them to diagnose a mole, let alone predict human behavior.

I could see a lot of innocent folks potentially getting hassled over this one.

I am going to presume and recommend that you monitor all the doctors who excel at 'serving' the state to this end.... it is where your next Mengele is going to come from.

By "other health care professionals" I am sure they mean Psychiatrists and Psychologists.

Careful what you say to your therapist you might end up on the gov's list. I can hear it now....

"I wasn't being LITERAL when I said I wanted to kill my ex-wife Mr. DHS can I go home now?"

This is less than good news even though the intent is to protect us.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know

Doesn't this violate the hippocratic oath?

HIPPA violation. Doctor - patient confidentiality unless there is a threat to the public. No doctor will jeopardize his career for that.

I posted this on the other thread on this exact same topic.

I think every citizen regardless of profession has a duty to report suspected terrorists or persons who promote terrorism. This is not doctors becoming “thought police” it’s just about them reporting suspected terrorists. It’s nothing new, say a patient comes in with injuries associated with explosives then the doctor has a responsibility to report this to the police, just like if the same patient was to start advocating the use of terrorism the doctor has a responsibility to report it, we all do.

And guys, as a health care professional let me tell you, patient confidentiality does not go as far as you would all like to think. If you tell your doctor or nurse something, odds are a whole bunch of other health care professionals are going to know about it pretty soon. If you say to your doctor “my husband stabbed me but don’t tell the police because then he will kill me” guess what, the doctor is going to tell the police. I have seen this happen, I have myself had a patient tell me something followed by “don’t tell anyone” only for me to say “I can’t promise that” then run off and the rest of the MDT because it is relevant. It goes for little things aswell, for health care to work different professionals need to talk to each other about patients, this goes all the way from the consultant to the HCA, hell most conversations are written down and recorded afterwards if something significant is disclosed.

So If a patient was to say to me “when I get out of here I am going to blow up a building” I am going to report it to the rest of the team to establish if this is a mental health issue or a genuine threat then report it to the police.

How would a doctor know I were a potential terrorist?

Pulled shoulders from the monkey bars?

Funny, Florida just passed a law making it illegal for a Doctor to ask if you own a gun!

For a change, our government is going in the right direction on an issue.

The very best way around this is for 100% of the citizens, or even 50, 60, 70, to go into their doctors with complete letters stating all they believe about the corrupt world and what they know about this new bill and saying, report me then, though the ones you are reporting me to are my definition of terrorists.

The bill would be nullifed.

A little resistance anyone?

Great job, UK. Make people who actually have mental health issues afraid of being even more stigmatized than they already feel/are. My God, a goodly portion of those people are already paranoid enough as it is.
