Look, I am not a welfare agent. I don't know the ins and outs. But I'm telling you, a lot of people have had to pay it back. It's a loan. My mother is still getting billed all these years later. That woman I linked to is having her accident settlement garnished after 12 years. These are not made up stories.

Frankly though, on this issue, I think they are one in the same. I think it is morally reprehensible to deny someone the most very basic necessities of life because they smoked a joint or have a more serious drug addiction problem.

I would much rather see my tax dollars go them, at least I am getting something for my money.

What did we get when the Pentagon simply "misplaced" $2.3 TRILLION in 2001. Close to half the entire national debt at that time. Never heard anyone scream about that, pass new laws, make a viral internet campaign.

This is the only scientific paper I have found regarding repayment of welfare. I am not a member so I cannot access the study in full, but here is the link anyway...

Explanation: S&F!

Uhmmm?

Your sewer on Drugs (By Eric Hagerman
Posted 02.21.2008 at 4:51 pm) [popsci.com]

The approach is, in essence, a community drug test. By analyzing wastewater at treatment plants or at strategic spots throughout sewer systems, scientists can run extraordinarily accurate and anonymous tests on an entire population without ever asking anyone to hand over a cup of urine. (Everyone has to use the toilet, after all.) If, say, Philadelphia implements an ad campaign against methamphetamine, officials could gauge levels of the drug in the wastewater to instantly see if it’s working. Maybe San Francisco is considering building methadone clinics—does the data suggest they’re worth it? And if law enforcement wants to know whether drug busts are reducing consumption in certain neighborhoods, it could get an immediate answer.

Supporters say that wastewater testing provides objective data that links the hard science of chemical analysis and the social science of epidemiology. Conducting a urinalysis of an entire city, they argue, could be far less expensive and time-consuming than surveys, which can take up to a year to process. It would give officials the ability to study drug use in cities and towns in nearly real time.

A Communal Drug Test via the Sewer. (by Tom Banse April 17, 2008 ) [npr.org]

In Oregon, a team of scientists is making an ambitious attempt to figure out which illegal drugs residents are using. They need only one teaspoon of sewage to administer a citywide drug test. The relatively new field of science is called "sewage epidemiology" and it has a range of practical applications.

It will cost alot more than the cost of the tests. If people on welfare do drugs, it doesnt increase their monthly living cheque any, and provides them with shelter.

If they don't have that, then you have billions in crime. Period. They have done these studies in Canada, homeless people cost hundreds of thousands, each one, you could buy them homes and put them on disabilities and SAVE MONEY.

Its outrageous that we live in a world of forcing others, of criminalizing choices like this, and thus making black market crime situations, and where all people don't have the right to land, resources, help each other build homes and plant gardens and build energy systems, with volunteering. No Slaveery. Healthy people want to shine their lights and use their talents, perhaps lesser hours, sharing work with others, more time with family, but you get the picture.

This isn't to save anyone money. Its to cost the tax payer more and stir up basic hostilies, fuel more hatred for others.

In Canada, we had a program an aquaintance was on, as a coc aine addict and hep c patient, who worked a litttle off and on, and who went off and on into rehab but didn't stay clean for long ever, where he was excluded from work DUE to his habbit, for he wasn't well, addiction is also something that is lifelong, no easy cures, only some get off, and when people fall between the cracks and end up on the street, they don't, they cost the system so much more, not to mention that they count too. Very very very much too. My aquaintance counted too.

And just for the record here too guys and gals, ever since Clinton signed the welfare to work program, welfare recipients are required to participate in work training activity. So it's not a free ride as long as the government is unable to create jobs. Talk about some major blame-shifting going on here. Government can't create jobs, so let's blame a few crack heads and pot smokers that don't have a pot to piss in.

Awesome info! I have heard about this before but forgot all about it!

Of course, it does not pertain directly to welfare alone, but it DOES pertain to drug use in this country, which of course is just a one-off from the center of this debate.

You can bet that if this is allowed to stand today, you will be peeing in a cup to renew your driver's license in five years from now.

Bad idea .

Which type of drug tests ? The $5. home test or the $100 lab tests ?

A bagel with a dusting of poppy seeds registers as heroine, also the lemon poppy seed cakes as well as the kolachie poppy seed cookies the eastern Europeans eat. Sudafed registers as meth many antihistamine register as meth riddalin for ADHD marax and a few other asthma and ADHA medications register as meth.

So we kick people off of welfare for eating a bagel or talking a medicine to get well great good thinking folks .

dsc.discovery.com...

Every time I go for the company random test I have to submit my asthma med list or it comes back as meth .

So lets kick single moms and sick people off welfare for eating the wrong food or talking medicine .

And although that may seem like excessive quoting, I ask that the mods allow it to stand as is, as a simple representation of the reality of false-positives. For every substance listed there, there will be a welfare recipient FALSELY kicked off of welfare, who actually needed it and did not do drugs.

Why not drug test doctors, lawers, teachers, CEO's? Of course EVERYONE knows that all welfare recipients are drug users. Duh! What about human dignity? Does that not matter anymore? So, screw welfare and screw the test, figure out another way....perhaps not legal. But oh, well.

I see your point, and agree for the most part. But the fact is that only about 3% of people on welfare use hard drugs.

Physically able as in passing a drug test, not that they can't function. If you can't pass a drug test, how are you physically able to get employment? Think you missed the point.

I honestly cannot find a single, sound, logical reason why this should have EVER passed as a law. But I am sad to admit, that most of my Facebook friends have been sending around a viral "repost" message cheering on this crap legislation. What a sad place this country is in.

Everyone saying that theres no dignity in drug testing people on welfare; people that want that new job have to be drug tested. The fact of the matter is, who ever is giving you the money can put whatever stipulation they want on it. If you don't wanna go through the hassle, then don't take the money.

I think a point missed here is eat some bagels and you wont get high but fail a drug test . Or take some NyQuil you fail .

With all the false positives that are possible people who can get a job or get welfare can be denied or kicked off for failing a drug test that has some serious flaws .

Personally If I had to quite talking my medication for asthma because it pops up as meth as a false positive I could not work at all I could barely get around the house .

No, I think you missed mine. I have worked with many people who may have been drug users, but they were never drug tested.

Regardless, 70% of drug users in America are full time workers between 18 and 49. Compare that to 3% of people on welfare who use drugs.

Whoever gives you the money, only goes so afar as private companies.

Once you allow the government to do it, the Constitution goes right out the window and they are taking DNA samples at the DMV.

Talk about dignity loss how about the dignity loss of having never not EVER EVER used meth being put on probation at work forced to enroll in a drug rehab program after work to keep your job . Then when the Drs paper work goes threw proving using a prescription drug and shown the the lab and supervisors the probation and drug rehab is rescinded but you still get weird looks from co workers. Thats loss of dignity.

If they are going to drug test they better make sure people know what false positives can happen and they really need a more accurate tests .

Its only 5 to 10 percent that come back as false positives. Even then, they can send it off for analysis and see exactly what caused the positive result. All you have to do is request further testing. If false positives are the main argument against welfare drug testing, thats kinda weak.
