'Global war on drugs has failed,' key panel says

www.msnbc.msn.com

A new report by the Global Commission on Drug Policy argues that the decades-old worldwide "war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world." The 24-page paper was released Thursday.

The global war on drugs has failed and governments should explore legalizing marijuana and other controlled substances, according to a commission that includes former heads of state, a former U.N. secretary-general and a business mogul.

Early news of this Global Commission's reports told this paper was coming out soon. This article is different in that the report is here now and provides link to that 24-page report - www.globalcommissionondrugs.org...

This is global-scale news that will effect the lives of almost everyone we know. The Drug War is creating violence on the streets making it dangerous to leave one's home. The misguided Drug War is also creating government forces intrusions into people's homes with no apology for mistakenly intruding into the livingroom of innocents, dismissed as collateral damage of war.

The corruption, the crime, turning politicians and government officials into criminals and turning criminals into politicians and high officials, this commission of very highly-placed people have come to the conclusion the drug policy has had devastating consequences and they want the war stopped. These are the people that can give this policy their blessings and have the new policy carried out. We should see actual chang very soon.

This report is about 20 years too late but it's nice to see them state the obvious I guess.

Tomorrow will be the same as yesterday, there will be drugs around and easy to get if that's your lifestyle, if it isn't you won't have much contact with them.

This report seems like a waste of paper to me.

You are correct that drugs will be around one day the same as the next, what will be different is that we won't be making any more of a new rich criminal class and home intrusions by police forces will come to a halt. Life will change for everyone because of this report.

Sorry about the extra thread, it was hoped this news article with a link to the report would make more than 2 minutes on the front page of ATS. There is already plenty about this here on the back-burner.

The irony of it is that alcoholic beverage drinkers do not consider themselves drug users. The fail to recognize alcoholic beverages as recreational drugs. They've been successfully conditioned to overlook that. Score one for mass-media.

I commend you for being able to read and understand this report so quickly. Thank you for your views.
