Anti-Vaccine Conspirator’s Dodgy Science Unmasked

If there is a conspiracy concerning vaccination, it is a conspiracy by antiscientific and obscurantist elements to link vaccination with various diseases and medical syndromes. This is mostly done for the profit of a few who have made careers out of quackery and/or public activism, but it is supported by hordes of gullible and frightened parents.

Prominent among members of this lobby is Gayle DeLong, an economics teacher who claims that vaccines gave her two children autism. This well-known quack has attempted to create a statistical link between vaccination and autism in a paper published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part A. Abstract here; clearly the magazine’s peer review board needs more competent statisticians.

DeLong makes her case through heroically far-fetched data manipulation, thoroughly artificial and comprehensively debunked here. Unless you’re a statistician, though, or given to asking searching questions, you could easily be fooled into thinking Ms. DeLong actually had found a link between vaccines and autism.

She hasn’t. This is just the old anti-vaccine Luddite conspiracy trying to promote epidemics in America and elsewhere as usual. It amazes me that some people are so selfish that they will risk a national, even worldwide epidemic for money and fame. But then again, what do they care?

If you did your research you would know the word Quack - Quackery is a term used for Doctors who peddle the filth that is slow killing future generations,

Amish society has no Autism because they don't take the horrendous mix of chemicals,

just to help you educate yourself, I'll lead you further on by the hand! Mercury is highly toxic yet is put into vaccines as a preservative "why"

I think you should do a little more research, the US Government"s vaccine injury program has already compensated 83 family's for their child's Autism caused by vaccines. And we all know how the Gov. loves to lose a lawsuit.

Here is the HRSA web page listing cases and compensations under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. Can you show me where those 83 families are listed?

And what do you make of this statement, also on the same page?

Your figure of 83 compensations came from here. Natural News is what I would call a quack site, one that touts parsley to cure breast cancer and plain water to cure radiation poisoning. Hardly a reliable source, I’d say.

Anyway, the claim is nicely debunked here. The payouts you refer to were in compensation for brain damage caused by adverse reaction to vaccination (a well-known if rare occurrence) that resulted in, among other things, autistic behaviour in the victims. If you want the facts about vaccine-related autism compensation claims, you’ll find them here: About the Omnibus Autism Proceeding (at the HRSA web site).

As you quite rightly state, one should always research one’s claims before making them.

You do realize a vaccine is a form of the virus injected into you right?

It may not seem like it, but you get sick from the vaccine, and since it is just one form of the virus you become immune to that one strain of virus, which is completely pointless when they're are billions of people living on the planet and if any other person got the same virus you did, it would just mutate into another form of the virus.

Making the vaccine you got, completely worthless, since the new virus you obtained is of a different genetic make up.

This is just from my simple biology class i learned in high school.

A virus is a virus, it does what it is meant to, replicate and make you sick, its why if you ever get a vaccine you get a little sick.

Unless, of course, it’s a bacterially-caused disease you’re being protected against, in which case it will be dead or weakened bacteria. Yes, I know what a vaccine is. I had a scientific education, which is also a kind of vaccine; it protects me against pseudoscience, quackery, superstition and a broad spectrum of other cultural pathogens.

A bacterial infection/disease would make no difference. It still replicates similarly to a virus and mutates about the same as well.

My point being vaccines are pointless..

The immune system is there for a reason, being immune to one form, of that one type of virus/bacteria is pointless. Since there are literally millions of mutant forms of that type of virus/bacteria.

In the end you are just paying out of your pocket to get sick. You will eventually get sick from the same thing you got vaccinated for in the first place, usually its just the flu.

I get prevention is the best thing, but the best way to prevent being sick is being healthy.

Lots of vitamins in your diet etc.

This statement is absolutely, 100% false. There is not a single bacterium that replicates in the same manner as any virus, nor are there any bacteria that mutate by the same methods as viruses.

If you are completely ignorant in a field, please do not try to pass yourself off as someone who is educated. It is incredibly easy to spot someone who is in over their head.

Again, 100% false. The vast majority of viruses and bacteria have a single strain, or a small handful of strains which share common antigens. If this weren't true, how do you explain the success of the small pox vaccine? And polio? And diphtheria? And tetanus? And hepatitis B? And hepatitis A? And Bordatella pertussis?.

You will eventually get sick from the same thing you got vaccinated for in the first place, usually its just the flu.

in your next reply, I want you to provide me with the number of small pox cases, paralytic polio cases, and pertussis cases in the United States for the past decade. If your statement above, is true, the number of cases per capita should approximate the number of cases per capita prior to the vaccination programs.

Abstract
The reason for the rapid rise of autism in the United States that began in the 1990s is a mystery. Although individuals probably have a genetic predisposition to develop autism, researchers suspect that one or more environmental triggers are also needed. One of those triggers might be the battery of vaccinations that young children receive. Using regression analysis and controlling for family income and ethnicity, the relationship between the proportion of children who received the recommended vaccines by age 2 years and the prevalence of autism (AUT) or speech or language impairment (SLI) in each U.S. state from 2001 and 2007 was determined. A positive and statistically significant relationship was found: The higher the proportion of children receiving recommended vaccinations, the higher was the prevalence of AUT or SLI. A 1% increase in vaccination was associated with an additional 680 children having AUT or SLI. Neither parental behavior nor access to care affected the results, since vaccination proportions were not significantly related (statistically) to any other disability or to the number of pediatricians in a U.S. state. The results suggest that although mercury has been removed from many vaccines, other culprits may link vaccines to autism. Further study into the relationship between vaccines and autism is warranted.

I've read that study, and it suffers from a fatal flaw: the investigators ignorantly believe correlation equals causation. In medicine, making such an error can kill patients. In the world of "what ifs" and statistics, it's generally just laughed at.

Here's another interesting correlation. In the same time frame they saw an increase of 680 cases of AUT and SLI, there was a 0.02 degree F increase in the Earth's average temperature. Using the logic of the paper you've cited, global warming MUST be the sole reason for autism. I mean, clearly if X happens and then Y happens, X MUST cause Y...right?
