I think this is very interesting. Really... this video got me thinking differently about many civil rights issues. I'll comment more later. Just watch.

So... are Texas citizens more progressive because their government lets their people be so or is NYC less progressive because they expect their social policies to mandate behavior?

I know this video doesn't touch on that specifically but... think about it. The Texas folks were all about defending the rights of another family dining next to them yet... the New Yorkers were more complacent about it.

Please understand, I'm a socialist at heart. I believe in social policy to protect people. But... these crazy assed Texans (once again) surprise me with this totally progressive behavior that makes me rethink everything.

Freedom might be the prerogative. I gotta say: this is a learning thread for me.

Racism/discrimination is something you can only naturally grow out of there is no way of forcefully removing people's emotions. Also when people have a sense of authority controlling the situation they feel that their involvement could be either counter-productive or unnecessary seeing as how the state will step in to correct an injustice.

The state can only do so much. They cannot be in every restaraunt or street corner... but individuals are. People will change their views over time and the natural change will be more natural and real than the ones artificially pushed onto them through indoctrination. Only people themselves can eliminate an injustice, the state is very limited in the way it can manipulate the natural human tendencies.

Your entire post is one I can agree with. However, I must point out the sentence I quoted. No matter what the government does to "balance" out the people, it will never be as effective as the people, themselves. In fact, more regulations on people make them more reliant on policy and less vigilant towards injustice than if there were none in the first place.

You are spot-on, man.

Huh? Their government lets them be so?

or is NYC less progressive because they expect their social policies to mandate behavior?

NYC is more jaded, is all. They see this type of stuff every day, from all angles. In TX, it's still a new phenomenon.

I think we need a slightly larger sample size to generalize 32 milion people

I'd like to know exactly where the Texas example took place. In NYC, people are conditioned to ignore their surroundings and worry about themselves, and a larger setting like that contributes even more to bystander effect.

So it might not even be a result of political views, it could simply be psychological.

Edit: Just looked up the location, Farmer's Branch Texas. They have around 25,000 people, similar to where I live but completely different from NYC in terms of population. They don't seem to have any sky scrapers or a busy city like NYC.

For the record, I think the gay thing is kinda weird.

The people? Not bad, just....weird. Not sure what causes it but, whatever. As long as they dont ram it down my throat or preach it to my kids, no problem.

Now to the point. I'll treat this as an "actual occurance".

the "waitress" was totally out of line. You dont discuss that sort of thing around the kids. You dont do that sort of thing in a restraunt. You dont attack your patrons.

now, the two ladies lipping up on each other? (unless the ones doing it are doing it for shock factor). If they were making a huge production of kissing, I would ask them to leave. I would also do the same to a straight couple.

As far as Texas being "less progressive" than NYC? I HOPE TO GOD SO! I hope like hell we're less progressive than anyone!

Except for the idiot younger generation that is raising kids, most of us older parent are still raising kids with traditional values. The South is all about tradition. Maybe due to all of us Germans,Czechs, Scots, and Irish down here?

WE are fighting the progressive/socialist/marxist/communist movement here in the South. After the North has gone to hell, we will be able to rebuild faster. We still havent lost it and BY GOD! WE WILL NOT!

Now, as far as we Texans being "more progressive".

nah. that aint it.

If someone is being treated badly, and you stand up for them, thats not progressive. Its manners and responsibility. We men here in the South are still supposed to hold doors for women...even feminazi's.

You can always tell at feminazi. They are all head up about the door being held open. They usually dont thank you which sends me to a passive aggressive nirvanna. "You are so very welcome , Mam!"

If the ladies only had that one little smooch and that is it, I wouldnt be worried about them being seated next to me.

If you wanted to ramp up the experience, you should have had the waitress being a male. THAT could have gotten epic. Might have been an ass whipping that day LOL!

Now, had the couple been men? I'd have likely let it go. Might have been pissed, but hey. They're men. They can handle themselves.
