I've thought about what you're talking about. In North America, we apparently have the same problem of gray squirrels running red ones out of their habitat. Nevertheless, I have seen gray squirrels around here for years and the red ones still persist. Seems the red ones are more territorial, probably because of the grays.

We've had several red squirrel invasions in this house. It's never been a problem, just good for a laugh.

At a Y camp I used to work at, we lived in tepees one year and had HUGE problems with red squirrels getting into our food. One morning, one of my co-workers (a french Quebecer), managed to trap one in a bag of trail mix (he had been waiting for a while). He leaped up and yelled "I got him guys", and ran out of the tepee wearing only his boxers. He went far down the main road in the area in an attempt to release it far enough away that it wouldn't come back. He said he passed a road biker on the way... I can only imagine how odd/funny it would have been to the biker to see a mostly naked french kid running down the road with a squirrel in a clear plastic bag hahaha.

Happy to hear there are so many people who are compassionate enough to have the will to save and rehabilitate animals. It kinda gives me hope that alien races wouldn't all abuse and use us... then again, look at factory farms, seems compassion is only truly held by a minority.

I just went to check on him. He's still sleeping, SO CUTE!!!

I had to move the box into a giant (unoccupied) rat/rodent cage in my basement because it's going to start raining soon.

Thanks for caring for the lil guy!!!

Call or bring the squirrel to your local wildlife center. Also, if not luck there, call around for Vets that deal in exotics.
He/she may or may not recover-fully- but would be a safe bet to have them looked over.

I was jogging this evening and came across a young gray squirrel in the road. It seemed quite weak and confused, and being the empathetic person I am, I had to at least move it off the road to make sure it wouldn't get hit by a car (I wondered if it had been grazed by one, but it didn't show signs of trauma, only potentially in shock). When I went close to it, it reached out for me and seem to want me to hold it. I picked it up and moved it to the side of the road but stood there in contemplation of what I should do. Should I leave it? This thread wouldn't exist if I did. I brought it home and fed it a bit of carrot, homemade whole wheat bread and gave it some water. It seemed fairly sedentary but would climb all over me if given the chance. It's covered in hair but its tail isn't bushy yet. It's eyes are open and it's close to the size of an adult red squirrel. It's teeth are coming out and it was quite capable of chewing a carrot. It started to fall asleep on me and now it's outside in a box with a towel inside to keep it warm. It seems as though it may still want to be nursed. Advice?

This happened to me last year... and unfortunatly i became quite attached to my little friend and he passed away. If you keep him, please don't over load him on peanuts!

Try to get him back into the wild as fast as possible, they can be amazing pets!! Look in the local pet stores for specific food designed for squirrels...Peanuts are good treats, make sure they're roasted not salted. Peanuts can be poisonous to squirrels if they're not roasted well. And raw peanuts are death.

I wish you all the luck in the world with him...

I miss my little man so very much and he died almost a year ago...

I loved him dearly... Even now im in tears thinking about him

I'll miss you always!

I'm sorry to report that he passed away.
I tried to do everything I could, but I think he might have had some issues I couldn't do anything about. It was upsetting, but I find some solace in the fact that I tried to save him.

He looks like he was a cute little guy, I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sure you were a wonderful friend to him, thanks for sharing. I read about the raw/salted peanut issues, thank you for telling me though, I appreciate it.

Sorry that happened, but you did what you could and likely made his last days easier.

I too had a squirrel buddy, they are cool little guys.

I'm so sorry to hear that, but thank you for trying to help it. Many people would have kept on going and left it to suffer alone in the cold to die. Reading all the posts made me happy to know I'm not the only bleeding heart out there in this world who thinks that all creatures deserve compassion.
