Provocation: Turkish flag on Agathonisi and Farmakonisi!

www.defencenet.gr

The Turks want to flag tomorrow two Greeks islands, Pharmakonisi and Agathonisi.
Translated from the greek link:

If eventually the Turkish authorities did not deter this incredibly provocative gesture of Namik Kemal Zeϊmpek then either we agree with the argument, or will be unable to stop a provocation that may lead to extreme situations.

The Coast Guard has received clear orders not to allow the approach to the two islands of Turkish vessels with "Each way" ... However in the wider region are major Turkish air forces under attack surface vessels exercise.

Here is a quick and raw translation, anyone who is able to do a better job, please do so.

Headline reads:
Turkish flag Pharmakonisi and Agathonisi!

Article:

Announced a major challenge, with much of the last business of the Islamic Turkish vessel "mauve Marmara" in Israel, goes to Turkey: Turkish orchigos Tomorrow's Democratic Party (successor to center-right political party formation of Suleyman Demirel and Tansu Ciller), Namik Kemal Zeybek said it would make landing at Agathonisi and Farmakonisi to spike the Turkish flag!

All this time the Greek delegation Defence executing orders of the political leadership today visited Turkey to discuss the ... Confidence Building Measures,

After the failed attempt by the parliamentary candidate of the Democratic Party and retired colonel Oumit Gialim to disembark in Agathonisi the glory of Gialim seem to envy the orchigos party Namik Kemal Zeybek, who aspires to disembark tomorrow Agathonisi and Farmakonisi.

The Turkish "Democratic Party" will hold first event on the Turkish coast and then "will start with boats to the islands along with the president of our party for the suspension of the Turkish flag. I hope not face any obstacle, "he said the local partisan player!

According to the president's party, Namik Kemal Zeybek islands Agathonisi and Farmakonisi held illegally by Greece in 2004 ... ..

The placement of the Zeybek is a central theme of his campaign. Of course all these notices of intent to exit the Greek islands and the Turkish flag hanging in them could be part of the rhetoric of a parliamentary candidate in the excesses of course to attract voters.

From Greek side have made recommendations to Ankara to "collect" the Zeybek, but despite a fierce statement of Greek Foreign Minister in the aftermath of the incident which caused retired O. Gialim and revealed defencenet.gr, Ankara does not seem willing to do so .

If eventually the Turkish authorities did not prevent this incredibly sexy move Namik Kemal Zeybek you will either agree with the argument, or we are unable to stop a provocation that might lead to extreme situations.

The Coast Guard has received clear orders not to allow the approach to the two islands of the Turkish vessels "Any way" ... However, in the region are large Turkish aeronautical exercise forces under attack surface vessels.

Seems that Turkey is exploiting the current weak economical situation that Greece is in. I wonder how Israel and the EU will react to this.

Well, I think Turkey is pretty smart to try this! It serves many purposes. The first and most direct is taking back islands that they think they have a right to. After that, if they are attacked, it will get them support from the Muslim community and other Middle Eastern countries.

Lastly, it serves as a great test to see how a bankrupt country can respond to invasive and provocative incursions. Many countries in the world are interested to see just how something like this will go down, because the US is practically bankrupt, so this is a great test run. If Greece is vulnerable, and if the EU doesn't rush to defend it, then perhaps the US is vulnerable, and NATO wouldn't rush to defend it?

Provocation of the United States is still a very unwise idea at this time, but if things don't turn around soon, we won't be much better off than Greece in a few years, and we will have a huge debt hanging over our head, and our current allies and investors might just decide to jump ship and support someone else and plunder the resources here.

Sure it would. They don't have to go to all out war, all they have to do is provoke a response. That will help their relations with Iran and the rest of the Middle East. That will get the UN's attention and the EU's attention. That will get them some concessions and some bargaining power, and it will force the hand of Greece and the EU. Greece is vulnerable. So, either Turkey is actually successful, OR they just back off and collect the political windfall.

If you read carefully, it is not the Turkish state but a politician who is planning this stunt. It's of note that general elections (parliament) will be held in a few days. There was a similar incident a few days ago stopped by Greek port authorities. During the last years, Turkish fighters have overflown a few times these islands which was already a concern. I think it's unclear if the civilian government was responsible for it, it might not be in total control of the army.

There are known tensions. I find it interesting that Wikileaks leaked cables were released just a few days ago on this issue (see here and here).

I feel it's a bit bold to claim it will get them support from the Muslim community (what is this anyway ?) and the Middle East. Turkey is a key member of NATO and a member of the OECD. Turkey has great interest in maintaining these good relations.

It's just ongoing, with both sides being complicit in the continuance of the aggression.
Similar things happened in Cyprus, until they were 'sold out' by Athens.
Oh, and the Brits didn't help there.

Sorry, sort of off topic, but my wife is Greek Cypriot and her Father remembers vividly the widespread hurt caused by decisions and lack of decisions!
