Another Example of NYC’s Oppressive Business Environment – You Need a License to Pump Gas

There are more than 10,000 gas pumps in the five boroughs of New York City, and if you want to work as a pump jockey at any of them, the City of New York demands that you pay a fee and pass a test in order to be considered ‘fit for dispensing motor fuel.’

Adding to the eyebrow-raising portion of this story is the fact that in New York, like most other states the average citizen is permitted to pump their own gas. Self-servers (like you and me) are not required to have a license, but the stations where self-serve is available must have a ‘P-15 licensed’ person on duty when gas is being dispensed.

The people who make their living putting gas into your car are probably not in the highest income tax bracket (if they pay any tax at all), which also makes it more offensive when New York City requires these folks to pay a $25 dollar licensing fee (with a $15 renewal charge every couple of years) in order to earn the minimum wage. And not everyone is eligible to take the test. From the city’s website;

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
2. Applicants must have a reasonable understanding of the English language.
3. Applicants must present a letter of recommendation from his/her employer. The letter must be on official letterhead and must state the applicant’s full name, character, physical condition, experience, and address of premises where applicant will be employed.
4. Applicants must present two (2) forms of satisfactory identification i.e., driver’s license and passport picture ID.

I just wanted to point this insanity out.Taxes are bad. But "Fees" are okay.

I wonder when they (government) will decide that gas is a hazardous material and force ALL of us to obtain licenses in order to fill our tanks.
Yet another example of the frog/water situation. Thgey are slowly but surely raising the heat.

Just remember, before you go into the store, you'll hav to get a TSA patdown first.
Can't have those pesky terrorists re-arranging the jello in aisle 5.

Isn't there a way for citizens to protest this besides going to the streets like actually going through the system?

The sad thing is, the people we elect into office to look out for our best interests are the ones puttng this to us. Local, state, federal government is going broke. They spend and spend, then spend more looking for ways to make more money.
Instead of looking for another liar to replace the previous liar that held office and made these "laws" we could boycott with our wallets. Spend money at locations that don't have these draconian rules/laws.

Then there is the torch and pitchfork route. It worked well with Frankenstein, but all we'd get out of it is tear-gas, tasers, and our names on a list.

I can understand prehaps some kind of certification, from the workplace safety aspect .Meaning this is a potential flamable and explosive liquid .I mean you should be trained to know how shutdown the pump,environmentally clean up a spill and know how to correctly extingish a fire. You wouldn't put out an electrical fire with water, if you understand me .
However this should be a certification not a license , that's just revenue grabbing like everything else the parasitic government doe's .You are right OP, the penalize the little guy from gaining work and yet they create jobs and revenue from thin air for themselves .Thanks for posting and drawing attention to this racket !

You can bet an entire department has been created for this. Staff, secretaries, a department head, an assistant department head, managers. . . . .
All so that they can take a little bit more, and in the process create a need for more government.
