404 Question

I swear I searched for this and couldn't find anything helpful there nor on the stickies. Simple question: How do we find out why a thread says "404" on it?

You don't

404'd threads are either ones which have been removed by staff for T&C violations, or moved to forums that you do not have access to such as Staff Only Forums..

I can understand removal because of T&C violation.
But what would be a reason to move it to a staff only forum? I can't think of any, so I am just curious.

Sometimes members will post complaints in the BBQ forum, which are subsequently moved to the staff only forum so that staff can review it.

It doesn't happen very often, but mostly we catch them before any sort of huge member discussion starts. As we don't air dirty laundry in public when such a thread comes up, it's taken care of rather quickly.

So there's no way to figure out which of the many possible causes it was when this happens? Is it always staff-generated or is it a glitch sometimes that we should report?

Nope any 404'd thread comes up is the result of staff action.

They are staff generated so there is no need to report them at all. And just in case you are wondering, I happened to write up a little thread on this a while ago which can be found here.

Would it be possible, that instead of 404ing it, delete the content, lock it, then give a brief explanation as to why it was deleted?

Or maybe a sticky thread, with a list of titles and a short explanation.

We do not air dirty laundry in public. Threads are removed for T&C violations, that's really all anybody needs to know about it. I understand where you are coming from, but that's an added forum and work and effort that the staff simply don't have the time to do.

Staff actions are for staff and the members in question only, not for the whole board to see.

i wonder why in some cases then if instead of having the whole thread (for instance where the OP wasn't in violation of T&C, but the posters were) that instead of it being 404'd it just gets closed so that people may still view the original content

I guess you are right, but I wasn't talking about airing dirty laundy. I only meant something simple like "closed for violation of this TC rule"

I suppose it probably would add a lot more work to the load, coming up with mod consensus as to what to put as the official reason.

If a thread is 404'd it's because the OP has broken T&C, OR the thread has devolved into nothing more than a poo flinging match and MUST be removed in order to preserve civility and decorum. Yes a few members can ruin a great thread for everybody else.

It's unfortunate, but there are some threads with some topics that strike far too much a raw nerve and when things get out of hand, the staff will do everythign they can to keep it open by removing posts and posting mod notes to keep on topic, stop attacks etc..

But sometimes that just isn't enough.

What if a thread of yours was removed for clearly suspect reasons? What if when asked in private message the Mod will not specify which part of the OP was in violation? What if then you receive no response through the complaint form?

All I am asking is who moderates the moderators? Are we supposed to believe that you are all thinking on the same frequency and that one persons opinion is the same as everyone since you represent TAN? You are all individuals, therefore open to corruption. How can a lowly member know that the Mods are playing by their own rules and not weilding power wildly for personal reasons or other?

Such a situation would be reviewed by ALL Staff.

Airing your grievences in public on the boards will get you nowhere. I would suggest that particular member please wait while the staff comes to a consensus about actions taken in order to give a response that will satisfy the particular member's grievence..

I was just reading a Thread in "Predictions and Prophecies" Forum - it only had a few posts. None of the posts was somehow violating ANYTHING really. The thread was about Nostradamus and his prophecy regarding Osama.
The SECOND I posted a reply, in which I posted a REAL PROPHECY (not from Nostradamus) the complete Thread vanished.
Since my prophecy was an ISLAMIC prophecy, am I to believe now that it was removed because of that? You may say no, but I have noticed stuff like this a few times now.

The question in the OP has been answered. This thread isn't going to turn into a why was my thread closed post fest.
