You write this:

I think most people understand, if not explicitly then implicitly, that there is probably no life after death.

And then criticize someone for bringing God into the equation and on top that paraphrasing Chistopher Hitchins? Come on, thanks for solving the mysteries of the universe for all of us in such a tactful and unbiased manner.

Empathy is somewhat counterintuive from a purely evolutionary point of view. I think it hurts because we let it. Or perhaps because we feel certain obligations haven't been fulfilled. The longer you dwell on it the more it becomes obvious there are countless explanations. Probably one of the more guttural subconscious-level reasons is simply lost possibilities. Fundamentally as a species we want to see the world brighten and grow with new and better prospects. Every time we witness destruction, mayhem, death, we see those possibilities dim and blink out.

The Irish had it right in my opinion ... life is the dance of a warrior, the wind on a rose ...

First let us look at life. Birth in itself is profound, the begining of one's life. As we grow, we are in constant wonder of the world around us. We learn, we explore and experience the wonder that is life. We see the beauty of nature, the flora and fauna, the complexity and depth of our minds and emotions. It is difficult for me to believe that it is all for nothing.

For those who have experienced out of body experience or after death experience, they know that we are more than just a physical body. It is my belief that after death, we continue on in some way.

Our grief for those who leave before us is because we love them, because they were an important part of lives and made a difference. We sometimes grieve for those we don't know because of our humanity and compassion as human beings. It touches us as another light dims.

Your right on, it is simply love that we grieve. We don't even have to know the person on a deep level. It could be an acquaintance or a friend of a friend. It doesn't matter.

If you die you do not change and live further. This part of yourself is already within. IT's the loss of this part that hasn't established itself on earth that hurts. Having no more opportunities to live this eternal self here on earth. %The hurt of unaccomplished things.

Why a person died can be a question where an answer is needed upon.

It is in our purpose to let the eternal part of ourselves take place here on earth. To build the church the bible is talking about. The religious soul. We fight for peace.

Life after death is different then life while alive. After death you are not alive. Do we in life speak to what is alive after death? Can that what is alive after death live while alive? Howcome it is not alive while alive?

What is 'alive' after death,.. can it merge with a physical body? What is it of yourself that remains when you are death?

A living man is a living soul the bible tells us.

As I comprehend it, you can follow your soul and you can follow something which is not your soul.

Then again, what is alive while alive that isn't life?

A soul is alive. Death souls and souls alive. So do stupid souls exist? There is no afterlife. IT would be a useless place. IT's a fairytale.

Jesus told us one dead is like one asleep. Going to heaven one does alive.

Well I can say if we seek and do not find, it may be because we found an answer we did not want. The answer is always given, it may not be at the moment you want it, but it revealed in time.
