lol wooops
the idea is that as part of posting when the tittle is added it is cheacked against current threads ongoing and displays any threads that are of a similar name
before being allowed to post a new thread

then you tick a box search completed

Interesting idea!!

Would be quite the challenge for any resident owners/staff to write a program (or search for one to buy, that may accomplish this)??

Of course, would have to be adaptable ('smart') enough to either prompt for spelling errors, or overlook them intuitively....oh, that's what the Human brain does.....huh.....

But, seriously. A very good idea, and outside the box! (At least to me...). Maybe the new "ATS Search" feature could tie in, in some way?

(That's me, trying to think outside the box)...a' la "Star Trek" and tying the Library Computer into the Sensors...or something like that... Ha!

the new search function was what gave me the idea
if it searches ats data servers then we should be able to compile a data base of thread tittles by age and
display the ongoing threads or any similar tittle
a pre post "look up" table utalizing ask.ats

it could really make lighter work for the mods
and would make searching pre post faster
so news breaks faster and without numerous sub threads

keeps all the posts "condenced" into a single thread per subject

Funny, your idea drew me the same direction. Well...I hope this gives 'food for thought'.

Really, it's a smart idea. Not sure it's possible, but this is how ideas blossom into reality, sometimes....when those who can 'imagineer' it, Do It!!

the cheepest option would be to have a pop up box with search results
when you try and enter the tittle
lol
not much fancy programing required
kinda part of the process of posting
instead of something done last

I must be missing something here, but could you not just type in the tittle into ask ATS that you want to use or the title of a news article to see if it has been used before you make a thread?

I may be completely off here, but i think what the OP is meaning is that with so many of the same threads being posted, it indicates that the search function is not being used before they make it. I think he is saying that if when someone makes a thread they start by making the title and that is where this would come into play. If the title is alike or similar to one that has already been posted then it would be blocked from being posted. It sort of like a lazy mans search. It lets the site recognize and decide if it is an existing topic. It would almost have to be in the code of the search function to utilize the databse there. At least thats what i think the OP means.

you got the general idea
the posting process is not very interactive
and even a current list of new threads being created
so if yo are half way through doing a thread
and it comes up in the list you know its been posted

and when the tittle box is filled out it is cheacked against this list so anyone trying to post the same news or event will get back the current threads on the subject area that are existing
if your tittle is not listed
tick a box search complete

that exact tittle is now put into the current list
could be by forum posted into
or all "current" threads

if the search is intergrated to tittle and subject and time of post
you could offer best match and latest on subject thread links

i think the more convient the ask.ats is the more it will be used

can the search and results be referenced by thread tittle but inside the post a thread box
for ease of search while posting

if not listed or different = check box
search completed
or
new subject matter

the easyer it is to get it right the better
