As outrage continues over body imagining scanners used by the TSA, a new legislation would cut off funding of the technology that has raised eyebrows across America since they began being installed throughout US airports in 2010.
Homeland Security Subcommittee Chairman Robert Aderholt's (R-AL) proposed legislation, the Fiscal Year 2012 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, denies the $76 million that US President Barack Obama requested to be used toward the scanners. As per Obama’s request, the funds would provide for nearly 300 additional body scanners being deployed across US airports,

Looks like we finally might get rid of these scanners. My only thing is, if they get rid of these scanners will they then require everyone to get a full body grope? I read somewhere else that even with these new scanners 202 items out of 212 items that should have been stopped made it through security.

When screeners with just a high school diploma or ged and 100 hours of on the job training what did you expect. Willing to bet child molesters everywhere are lining up for these jobs.

Or Catholic Priests. Who knows all the types of people applying to join the TSA.

I work with explosives. I recently flew from Colorado to California then to Pennsylvania and back to California with a multi-tool in my carry-on that was literally caked in explosives(commercial and improvised).

I wasn't even aware it was in my bag until a SECOND trip to Pennsylvania when the X-ray machine dinged on it. The TSA employee swabbed the outside of my bag for explosives and came up negative, then she rifled around in my bag till she found my obviously explosives encrusted multi-tool and did not bother to swab it.(Which saved me a big headache and a lot of time.
She then escorted me out of the security area so I could mail it back to myself. During our walk out of the security area I realized how many trips I had made with it in my bag.
On my way back through security(explosives free at this point) I took the opportunity to inform her how incompetent they all were, and surprisingly she agreed with me that the TSA was largely ineffectual.

Did some homework. L-3 Communications (the maker of the body scanners) is a BIG campaign contributor.

Use your head for once. TSA is not going to hire people with felonies. They aren't that stupid.

Your being sarcastic right. Because if not, you should read THIS.

I would opt for neither. The metal detector is good enough for me. If people weren't so sensitive about profiling and screening then things would go a lot smoother, but not in this PC society. That's why everything is so backed up and absurd.

Am i the only one that thinks Body scanners are a hell of alot better then pat downs? I would prefer that some guy in a room on the other side of the airport or something see's a werid naked pic of me. Then some TSA agent touching me up or touching up kids. I think its a good compromise and its actually effective(Pats downs dont cover cavities..) Just think we get rid of these scanners then there going to be more invasive searches

Forgive me if I am mistaken but aren't most, if not all forms of radiation that penetrate your body harmful when used too many times? There is a reason why everybody leaves the room at the hospital or dentist when they make an X-Ray.

I think the outcome of the vote on this bill is going to be a good indicator of just how badly congress has been infiltrated and corrupted.

S&F OP. I really hope this is the beginning of the US Congress fighting back.

I have a lot of hope for this legislation and I wish Aderholt all the best, It's about damn time someone in Congress was actually standing up for us.

Unfortunately, I'm worried that far too many of our politicians are already being paid off, and this bill will go no where.

It's really time to make lobbying illegal. Or at least we need to start voting in independent candidates such as the Green Party who refuse to take corporate donations. How we continue to delude our selves into voting in these shills (Republicans and Democrats) completely baffles me.

Honestly, I'd rather be groped. But I'm a pretty tall / bigger male so i'm sure they'd keep it to a minimum

Haha, Better to be groped than to be shot with radiation I suppose. I'm sure they will try to keep it to a minimum in deed.

I didn't know all child molesters had felonies. Even the ones that hadn't been caught? You would be surprised at the amount of pedophiles in the us that have not acted on certain urges....

This is a power struggle between bribed politicians and those who truly oppose these scanners in positions of power, and I'm sure there must be some. That's what it seems like anyway.

In any case, I think the furore over all of this is definately having (or going to have) a negative impact on tourism to the US as word spreads of overzealous TSA staff. I really hope everything can go back to normal with just metal detectors and the old screening processes where molestation wasn't encouraged. We'll see, huh?
