A comet goes in; a CME comes out. Coincidence? Probably, yes, the sequence was coincidental. The comet disintegrated as much as a million kilometers above the stellar surface. There's no known way that the wispy, vaporous remains of a relatively lightweight comet could cause a billion-ton cloud of hot plasma to fly away from the sun at 400 km/s (the observed speed of the CME). Moreover, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed the eruption that did propel the CME into space. There's no comet in the field of view of this must-see movie

Thought of creating new thread since I am changing the subject, seems like a odd coincident to be me. Want to raise my thoughts, I am thinking the CME isn't a CME as we know but most probably the comet dust as it exploded. This would mean the "CME" is the comet broken up and most likely CAN contain some larger sized objects than the normal CME. Luckily this isn't directly towards earth, can we expect a meteorite shower soon or a big piece? These objects would be unseen-able unless they move in front of the sun creating shadow?

the sun attracts objects with gravity, it does not repel them. the comet is absolutely tiny compared to the sun and the CME, it simply doesn't have enough material in it to explode out into the solar system like that.

now, the electrical and magnetic relationship between comets and CMEs is something that has been proposed, but not well explored. it's possible that the charge of the comet triggered an already potential CME as it interacted with the sun's electric and magnetic fields. but this is all energy stuff, the actual physical material which made up the comet was obliterated by the sun's heat.

this is definitely a relationship which should be explored, if we could work out how to trigger massive solar flares and CMEs maybe we could harness their energy.
