East coast U.S putting up " emergency evacuation" signs.

I'm in NYC and within the last ten years they've been putting these sings up all over the place. Even back then I found it real weird that they'd have 'coastal evacuation routes' when we've never had a tremendous storm to warrant this. I am all for preventive maintenance, but it was too random for even back then. No less now.
There's been tons of preparation billboards being put up everywhere too. It's quite eerie.

Thank you for fixing my phonetically driven rant FloggingMary, I'm sure that those who aren't using American pronunciation will find it useful. I wrote in that way because it just pains me to see people criticize preparation and then get all up in arms about a lack of preparation... So I went uber-sarcastic on him to try and prove a point in an ironic and hopefully somewhat humorous way. Sure, the government is notorious for failure and a lack of foresight but give credit where credit is due and just be thankful that those put in charge of ensuring that the public is aware of evacuation routes and the potential for coastal flooding are at least attempting to do their job. It's also very likely FEMA has nothing to do with the signs either. Your local and state versions of FEMA are probably using federal funding initiatives to put them up.

You know exactly what I was talking about.

We all know there are not different colored routes, but those who are smart will completely avoid the official evac routes.

I don't see how anyone can be freaked out by such a thing. That shows a complete unnatural level of fear.

Evac routes are just that, routes the people in charge wish us to take in the event of an emergency.

Of course it will lead to massive gridlocks, the first hurricane to head towards Houston after Katrina, most of Houston freaked out and headed for the hills. They didn't take into account that a) the city was better planned and able to withstand such a storm b) Houston is a decent distance from the coast and c) Houston isn't built in a freaking bowl. Oh yea, it wasn't even a direct hit. Hit more north if I remember correctly. The town I am currently in had more damage and is significantly north of Houston. Lots more flooding here than in Houston.

Parts of my family headed towards Dallas, got less than halfway in 10 hours. Turned around after we called them and said nothing more than a few flooded streets and some down limbs. I slept through "the worst" and I usually get woken up if someone sneezes.

My advice, learn your area's evac routes, and then learn the other roads running parallel and take those. Being afraid of these things is silly. It's what FEMA and the government should have done years ago on the East Coast. Just because you are farther north does not mean you can't get a hurricane.
