Top rated overview page

I come look at the site everyday, and read random things. Usually I start by looking at the main overview page. I think it's too static. I have a few ideas that maybe could improve the top picks to read.

1.) By time period : I've seen the top few not change for 1+ month
2.) Top rated post from the last time the user logged in (so custom content per user)

I guess what I want is a more detailed setup for the overview page, maybe a page where you can sort by flags / stars, etc.
