OK ATSers, here is a question.

This is a fantasy scenario, but nevertheless, I think it will yield some good info.

If you woke up, and by some reason, unknown, you find yourself in the middle of a wilderness, be it desert, forest, whatever,

What five things would you choose to have with you?

You are allowed five items only, and they have to be realistic items which you could carry with you, like 'paracord', and not things like suv etc
also no phones.

What would be your five essential items?

1. Boots
You must have good foot protection at ALL times heck even inside you own home, but in a wilderness situation they are the most important thing.
2. Gerber Multitool
I have had mine for roughly 20 years and can do a MacGuyver of things with said tool.
It truly is invaluable.
3. Pants
I would not want to be running through the brush getting ,,,,.... umm scraped up by branches or even sunburned down there.
4. Shirt
Same as below but not as crucial, but we know every bit helps.
5. Credit Card
When i hike out of said wilderness, desert Etc. i would wanna find a diner and a phone and possibly a hotel to stay at until rescue could arrive.

Already prepped....

1) Military spec backpack -Need something to hold items carried or found, pack is equipped w/ water bladder and tube to drink on the move.
2) Glock 17- light weight, durable, reliable, common 9mm round
3) Mossberg 500 - once again reliable and durable- has sling for ease of carry- slug rounds will allow up to 100 yards accuracy
4) Flint or magnesium fire starter
5) Cold steel machete or similar w/ serrated edge

Water and food is extremely important but 5 items will only allow for up to 3 days of rations or water. Having the tools to maintain your safety while promoting your chances of survival will keep you prepped in the long run. In a SHTF scenario there will be looting, violence, and pure stupidity scene amongst the survivors. Living in the Easter, PA I would try and make my way W, NW..away from the populace. Having been trained in survival, firearms safety, and game prep. since a young age, I am confident in my skill set for navigational and shelter purposes.

At the end of the day, the most important thing you to bring is a level head.

1 - the largest lightweight packable tent I could handle.

2 - Popiel Pocket Fisherman. I can always find bait in nature.

3 - A rifle with interchangeable barrels for small and medium sized game along with ammo.

4 - A small supply of dehydrated food to carry me over if I have trouble hunting or fishing.

5 - Some type of water purification system or tablets.

What I would not need.

1 - Fire starting equipment. Give me something that will burn and I will get it lit even if I have to make an Indian style fire bow from scratch.

2 - Nature food guide. I already know enough wild foods and how to find them to survive anywhere that has enough of an ecosystem. and what to avoid. For instance I would not even consider eating mushrooms. there are too many dangerous ones and their food value is very low for the trouble and energy I would expend finding them.

3 - knife, axe, or other cutting tools. There are many ways to use natural materials to make serviceable substitutes for them. And the rifle I did take would provide better protection anyway.

4 - Bow and arrows. Again, there are ways to make serviceable substitutes from natural materials. A sling, spear, or hand made bow and arrows could be made before I ran out of ammo for the rifle. And all can be deadly within a reasonable range. Remember, David slew Goliath with a simple sling and some round stones.

Knife
Metal Canteen
Condom (you can never have too many)
Fire starter of any kind
Paracord

The first four are the "survival essential four":
Something to cut
Something to boil water
Something to storage water
Something to start a fire

You should never get out of home without these four, plus condoms have an extra use.

I'm assuming we have clothing, so not including it...

1) Army Survival Knife (it already has flint/steel, fishing kit, matches, etc. in it)

2) A good tarp (for shelter)

3) A canteen (for water)

4) Para-cord (for rigging the shelter, keeping food away from animals)

5) Case of ration bars (for when I can't find/kill food)

I'd probably try and find a nearby stream, pond, etc., make some fish traps, some spears for animal hunting, etc. and use the tarp to rainproof a good shelter.
