Even McDonald's is gettin' expensive!

This is for McDonald's in Canada, so your mileage may vary... but I expect the same story elsewhere.

Yes, I know someone is going to say "McDonald's" is unhealthy food, etc. That might well be, but I've read that over the last couple of years with all the tough economic news, one of the few businesses that has done well is McDonald's because it's the cheapest, most affordable restaurant.

I walk about 4 KM each way to work, and each morning I stop at a McD's for a medium coffee and a couple of regular muffins (bran, carrot, whatever). Last week the price with taxes was $2.89 CN. I stopped in Monday morning, ordered the exact same thing, and it was $3.11! I commented about it to the manager and he shrugged, just saying their costs are going up too.

This AM I felt like something different from the usual muffins, so I ordered the breakfast burrito meal: two of their little egg and sausage breakfast wraps, a hash brown and coffee. The last time I bought this a couple of weeks ago, it was $5.25 with tax, so I stand there ready with $6 as I wait. The total came to $5.89 CN - the meal went up about 55 cents plus tax!

Now even crappy, cheap ol' McDonald's is pricing itself out of the reach of average working folks!

Well I don't mind paying more sometimes, I think it's better this then to see companies lowering their food quality or size and asking the same price. I'm looking at you Pizza Hut! Damn that place SUCKS now omg

Of course, is it possible to go lower in quality at McDonalds? Actually yes lol

I would actually like to tip at McD's if I could, the pay is pretty bad there.

While I can't speak for Canadian McDonald's, there was a news story that Mcdonald's in the U.S. would be raising their prices drastically because of inflation.

However, with the obesity crisis in this country, it might not be so bad if a Big Mac were $8.00, and out of the price range of some people.

I live in Southern California, and haven't noticed a price increase for McDonalds in the last few weeks, though prices are remarkably higher over the last couple years. I have noticed a price increase at the grocery stores, however. One example is bacon. I needed a package for a recipe and good ol' Farmer John Bacon was $8.99/lb. The "store" brand was 6.49 for the 12oz package. Ironically, the all-natural, uncured applewood smoked bacon was only 3.49 for a 12oz package...so I went with that.

Wrapping this back around to your post, as to not hijack your thread, I think that while prices are going up for transportation of goods, due to oil increases, etc..I think some of it is just price gouging. The mentality is that people are expecting prices to increase, so everyone is out to capitalize on that, whether their costs are truly higher or not.

The may also be looking down the road and projecting higher costs, and rather than a sharp increase all at once, a few dimes here and a few nickels thre might be easier for people to stomach, and less noticeable in general. You, like me, sound like someone who pays attention and notices a slight change, though...I would venture to say a lot of people don't.

everything is going up.. and alot is to do with oil..
energy costs are rising.. production costs are rising.. transportation costs are rising and so on..
oil goes up and we pay for it.. many times over..

You seriously found McDonalds to be cheap?

I mean, it is kinda "cheap", but the food is really "small" and they don't even allay your hunger imo, it just makes you even more hungry.

macdonalds has always been expensive.

you get a little handful of matter for 7-8 dollars.

yet the ma and pop next to it will likely give you a whole plate several times the size of real food for the same price.

and you wont be hungry again in 20 minutes.

Why the hell not? Oil companies do it all the time and then claim record profits every time.

Of course the reality is that the spoiled Canadian is expecting life to be dirt cheap and doesn't take in account that 2/3rd of the world is slaving off their ass to make sure that NA and some parts of Europe can continue living on the standards they do.

Besides the rest of the world sees the MC as a luxurious restaurant and most non westerners can only dream of going there.

Think about it.. really your spoiled and the days are numbered for people like you (and me)...

(Now that was the truth, please don't see it as an attack.. I am really the same and it's an attack on myself in many ways.)

i try not to eat there, but sometimes when i am on the road, it's quick and easy

i just got a filet o fish and 2 double cheeseburgers and it was almost $7.00

the cheapest way to eat out is a once a day meal at some place like Golden Corral, Hometown Buffet, type places. Just completely gorge on the food- shrimp, steak, fish, 4 varieties of chicken, a dozen different desserts, huge salad bar, all for about $12 dollars.

that one meal at around 1-3pm will keep you stuffed until morning and is higher quality than a $7 value meal at the Mc.
