Anti-aircraft missiles are in place at three Athens sites, including Tatoi airfield near the athletes' village, and elsewhere around Greece.

It is part of a 1.2bn-euro security plan ($1.bn), the most costly in the history of the games.

Hundreds of surveillance cameras are also being installed around Athens.

I hope that there isn't any trouble during the olympics but it is good to see they are taking the proper precautions.

The Patriot sites -- three around Athens, two in the northern city of Thessaloniki and one on the Aegean Sea island of Skyros -- were placed on alert July 1.

An air defense official said Athens has contingency plans to shoot down hijacked planes that could be used in an attack, and plans to impose a no-fly zone over the city several days before the Aug. 13-29 Olympics.

Air defense systems have been placed around the Athens area, including U.S. Patriot missile batteries, together with French and Russian systems, defense officials said

I wonder what Russian systems they are talking about?

And don't forget the $312m Blimp.

The blimp, which contains dome-shaped sensors, and equipment to detect chemical weapons, was meant to relay video images to the Olympic Security Operations Center, officials said.

The command and control center, valued at $312 million and supplied by a consortium led by the U.S. firm Science Applications International Corp., would also be fed information from more than 1,000 cameras and sensors in the Olympic Village and around the Greek capital.
