Hitting up the Surplus store

look, you wanna buy what you can grab and carry IN A HURRY, plan your gear if youre gonna hump in the woods or mountains for MILES. my bugout gear consists of hiking boots, a vest with various small pouches, and a day assault pack.

this pack is good because I can carry a camelbak in it
all i hsver inside is 3 mres, 3 pair of socks and drawers, talcum powder, surplus rain poncho and fishing line
TRUST ME FOLKS, pack VERY LITTLE, and go hiking in it, make SURE you can go for hours in it, if not, you'll be ditching those ALICE packs in the first hour

Why are you purchasing these things from a surplus store? Is it for a SHTF scenario?
I have read some of these posts and have not yet seen anyone address the issue of standing out like a sore thumb in the woods, city or roadside.
Is there not an issue of being targeted and not having the mobility to react in a tactical situation.
Picture yourself on the other side of the equation, a loot/boot figure who is waiting for a cash cow of survival gear to come walking down the road/trail.
If I were posted up on in my "manhunter" stand and saw a guy waltzing around in a 90lb ALICE pack with his LBV and assortment of pouches I would take him as my trophy like the good patient hunter I am, not the guy who came by two hours before carrying almost nothing.
It might be seen as better to blend in as someone having little of value like a young buck, not worth giving your position, instead of the loaded down 12 point buck ripe for the taking...
I beg you and others like you, to travel light, invest time and energy into skills of self sufficiency. Learn to hunt small game instead of carrying large amounts of food, learn the plants and their benefits. Learn the terrain of your intended path and alternate routes, locations of springs and natural defense positions etc, in your journey to your intended location.

I would rather be prepared, then rely on a chance that someone, who is prepared, is going to walk by.

Probability seems to lean toward that in which those who will be unprepared when SHTF will greatly outnumber those that have prepared. And without the necessary skills of self sufficiency themselves, they will prey upon those which have the misfortune of crossing their paths, some of whom will be burdened by unnecessary gear which will reduce their capacity to react in a tactical situation. Bushmen and Tribesman do not carry large packs, most of which travel great distances, they know their surroundings. Prepare with knowledge, it can not be lost as easily as a bag.

During the depression game animals in the state of Georgia were wiped out in less than a year. It wasnt till the 60's that Georgia imported new herds of deer from Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. There were NO deer in those decades as a direct result of progressive politics ruling the land. FDR the Destroyer.

Unless you have tons of MRE's (pretty pricey) you could be scavenging for food stuff and most scavenges will be canned.

Plus, for a can opener, it's very small, very light weight, and cheap enough today to be very valuable in trade later.

Just a thought...take it or leave it. The whole romantic "living off the land" fantasy is still exclusively a short term solution.

don't you love how many have planned to "live off the land"?

I mean really

its like there a herds of game animals standing aroud. the animals will go extinct in a matter of WEEKS.. there's probably 100 "live off the landers" for every animal.. fish too. at least here in the lower 48.

Well if we can all learn to live together, then the best survival would be to sit back and depend on each other.
