Cigs are $6.50 a pack where I'm at. I roll my own and spend about $35 a month. You wanna know what would hurt the government? If everyone quit at the same time. Just think of the money they'd loose.

By an outside stretch that were to happen, do you think we would start seeing some pro-smoking campaigns? Any ease-up on indoor smoking restrictions like in bars and lounges?

Absolutely, illenois just rolled back the ban on smoking in casinos! There are bars breaking the smoking bans almost everywhere now.

The signs of the degradation of the anti-smoking movement are cropping up all over the place!

Look for big food to the target of the next set of outrageous taxes to replace the tobacco taxes.

That article is missleading. It's pretty much using numbers like the DEA does in a drug bust. If one pack of cigs costs $4.50 a pack from Virginia...the trucker is'nt selling a truckload at $13.50 retail.
Those numbers are inflated.
He MIGHT be getting 10bucks.... but not $13.75... WHY would a retailer pay $13.75 or why would someone buy bootlegged smokes at retail?

Classic inflated journalism. Big Bank is being made..no question.. But, I wish they would stick to the facts.

Here in Missouri the cheapest cigarettes are still around $2.50-$3.00 a pack, while brands like Marlboro run about $5, and some, like Newports, are more like $6. I buy roll-your-won tobacco and a whole POUND of tobacco costs me $12. A pound of tobacco lasts me over a month. So for the price of 3 packs of cigarettes I can roll my own for a whole month. Can't imagine why anyone who smokes isn't doing the same thing.

The government will never learn. It will keep repeating the same mistakes over and over. The tighter it squeezes, the more problems it causes.

The existence of black markets in and over themselves in rebellion; humans don't like being controlled, they don't like stupid laws, and they'll definitely find ways to make a profit.

Well said, and for non smokers the same applys for other things. How many motorists would buy knocked off cheap petrol if they could? I know id definatly buy a few gallons.

It'll get to that eventually. Black market "gas" exploding in half assed engine conversions.

Folks will be buying in moonshine jugs.

$3.79 for a pack o Camels here in the Carolinas. $9 a pack? People would revolt down here, as there are no cheaper places to smuggle them from.

The mafia has been hijacking tobacco trucks for years and selling the merchandise to small businesses all over at a discount.

It just seems now this type of theft has become a mainstream event.

here in NJ its 6.79 state minimum for a pack of marlboros (+7% sales tax), that's after the 160% tobacco tax calculated in before the min price.

only an hour away in pa, they're about 20% cheaper and in NYC they're 11-13 a pack at most stores.

prior to obama's tobacco tax in 09, I used to get my 5.7oz tub of RYO (Bali shag) which used to not be under the tobacco tax for $14; now its $33 for the same tub and $22 in PA (rolls about 1 carton worth)

I live on an Indian reservation where the smokes are cheap. By the way, there are 50 cartons in a case. I used to work as a security guard in a cigarette warehouse, that's how I found out there are 50 cartons in a case. I've read reports in the local papers of the state police intercepting people with 20 or more cartons of cigarettes on the highway. This is northern NY. I don't know what a pack costs off the reservation. On the reservation name brands go for about $5.50 a pack. Local brands and there are many, generally sell for about $2.50 a pack. I'm willing to bet, that after they totally outlaw tobacco and tobacco products, you'll still be able to get a pack on the rez.

I was a smoker for 30 years but I gave up a month ago today for the simple reason that the prices are set to skyrocket, if you think about it, food crops have gone up massively without any real changes to supply except fuel costs, tobacco is a crop as any other and must take up large amounts of fertile land to produce so it too will rise steeply in the coming months. I used champix tablets to stop, (not sure of the US versions name) but they work well with few side effects, I dont really miss it any more and feel cleaner in my life, it also gives me more money to spend on food preps.

In California Marlboro's are between 3.99 (for the usual dollar off specials you can always find) and 6.50 (USD) Cheapest to be had is around 3.49 USD.

I've been complaining and pissed and think I'll calm down a little now after reading what some of you pay.

Either way I am insanely angry about the government targeting smokers. Let the people and the market decide what they should cost and when they should quit. I don't want or need a nanny police state telling me what to do with my life or body.

I think it is sad to watch the country my ancestors built fall to crap.

I just had to pay 175 bucks because I didn't the 225 bucks to get my vehicle registered plus pay to take it through obscene smog checks where the net emissions don't even matter to the pass fail... . Believe me I know it is happening all over the place.

If I knew how to do anything other than complain or vote for someone who won't bother to change anything I would do it.
