Mainstream news is recognizing the growing gas prices(or so it appears)...

Gas In 6 States, Nation's Capital Tops $4 A Gallon

WASHINGTON -- Add New York to the growing list of states where gas prices are topping $4 per gallon.

On Sunday, the Empire State became the sixth state to top $4 for the average price of a gallon of gas, joining Alaska, California, Connecticut, Hawaii and Illinois, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge.

The average price of gas also rose to more than $4 per gallon in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. The next states to join the list could be Michigan, which has gas for $3.95 per gallon on average, and Indiana, where the average price is $3.94. Nevada, Washington and Wisconsin are close behind. Hawaii has the highest price in the U.S. at $4.48 per gallon. Wyoming has the lowest, at $3.54.

Gas prices are pretty close to $4.00 already in WA/ID/OR. I have a feeling that it won't stop there.

For American drivers, the $4 mark harkens back to the summer of 2008, when oil rose to $147 per barrel and gas prices topped out at $4.11 per gallon before the economy went into a tailspin.

The rapid increase at the pump follows a parallel rise in oil. Since Labor Day, oil has risen 48 percent and U.S. gas prices have gone up 42 percent. The increases gained momentum in mid-February when a popular rebellion in Libya turned violent and shut down the country's exports. Crude has jumped 30 percent since then, with gas prices gaining 22 percent.

-same as above-Source:www.wftv.com...

Conspiracy, excuses, truth? What do you think? What are you willing to do about it(such as use less gas, protest, etc). I'll post my answers in a reply.

Thank corporate elitists for that. Oil is money, and we're on the war path in the middle east to get more of both of those.

This is pretty awesome. I finally have an accepted excuse to not travel to all sorts of idiotic events this Summer.

With any luck I'll be able to get out of holiday travel too.

What sucks so much is, there's absolutely no reason for gas prices to be this high. There's plenty of oil supply. Saudi Arabia is actually cutting their production. Prices are so high because of oil speculation on the stock market, mostly by Goldman Sachs, Citi, and other large banks. They're making billions by speculating on oil prices. If Obama or Congress passed a law making this illegal for oil, the price for a barrel would drop to around $30-50.

The price per barrel was like $110 right before the economic crash of 2008. Right after the crash, oil tumbled to around $40. There wasn't a sudden drop in oil demand, there was a sudden drop in oil speculation. Stop the big banks from betting on prices, and the price will fall to what it actually costs for a barrel, $30-50.

I filled up four gas cans back when it was $3.65 a gallon. It's currently two nickels away from $4 here (Ohio). Added stabilizer and put in my garage. I don't have to drive everyday for a day job (telecommute), so I'm lucky. I was saving up to buy a scooter, but my problem is that in just a few months it'll already be getting too cold/wet to drive it. So I'd be spending $1000 at least for something I can only drive 5 months out of the year at the most.

I was looking at the Smart Car, but it gets terrible gas mileage for its rinky dink size -- 33mpg, WTH? Size equivalent cars in the UK get twice that, why are we given inferior, gas guzzling autos?

I guess I'm going to have to change my habits -- start grocery shopping for the entire month in one trip and just freeze the perishable stuff like milk and cheese. Shift my recreation day to Sunday after church since I'll already be in the city.

Gas here in our little town in Washington is 3.89 a gallon but if you go across the border into Oregon it drops to 3.79 a gallon and since it's just a 10 min drive that's where we go to fill up. Taxes are the big reason Washington's gas is so high.

This just makes me sad. I have 4 kiddos, so the 'burban was a must, but since we are kinda poor, its a guzzlin s.o.b. 96. Ugh! We go to the docs, grocery store, and neccesity type stuff. Last time I put gas (6 bucks!) It was 3.65...
To "save" we walk to the corner store, and I try to stay within a 4 block radius, lol, sucks, I was wanting to take my son to splashtown this year, since he is tall enough finally. But the gas to get there? Enjoy the sprinkler son...

I'm one to believe it's a conspiracy, one that I seen coming. That is due to world events, choosing any scape goat, either it be connected to oil or not.
I have a gas efficient car, but even that doesn't help in the long run...being only slightly better than one that uses more gas. Last time the gas prices were $4.00 plus a gallon, I working part time and going to college full time. Most all of that went for gas to go to college.

What are the viable alternatives;
-Hybrid car-if one can afford it
-Riding a bike, walking, living close to stores taking a bus, carpooling
-Going as few places as possible, shopping on one day instead of many days
-Vacation with friends
-Work another job to pay for gas for your other two jobs

It's almost if they are trying to keep us down, keep us locked inside...
