The mandate and many tenants of the health care reform plan were originally crafted by Conservatives in the early 90s. The individual mandate was a Heritage Foundation idea as a way to combat the idea that only a "Medicare for all" plan would be able to control costs.

The concept of the individual health insurance mandate originated in 1989 at the conservative Heritage Foundation. In 1993, Republicans twice introduced health care bills that contained an individual health insurance mandate. Advocates for those bills included prominent Republicans who today oppose the mandate including Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Charles Grassley (R-IA), Robert Bennett (R-UT), and Christopher Bond (R-MO). In 2007, Democrats and Republicans introduced a bi-partisan bill containing the mandate.

If you think the individual mandate was always pushed by the liberals, you are incredibly misinformed on the subject. Liberals supported the Medicare buy-in, Medicare Part E, Public Option, or Single Payer proposals that were rejected by conservatives. Many liberals still hate the legislation because it doesn't include these things.

Fortunately, the state waivers included in the legislation means we can enact single payer and public option plans on the state level. When enough large blue states enact them, it will pretty much be a done deal.

If you study the electoral map you'll also see that Obama will more than likely be re-elected. Right now it's in the cards.
