I dare an IRS rep to come try and take 100 dollars a day from me.

Where I come from thats called thuggery.

And IRS agents are called thugs. Why else would they be involved in healthcare issues?

This year my share of my healthcare premiums nearly doubled in price. For this year my tax withholdings doubled as well.

Hopefully, the answer to your question is in here, OP. Fire Dog Lake is a "progressive" site, but they fought extremely hard to Kill the Bill. (please forgive me for not looking for you. This issue is literally bad for my blood pressure)

fdlaction.firedoglake.com...

This isn't as "over" as the democrats would like for people to believe. And it boils down being TAXED simply because we're breathing and alive.
Please DO NOT leave it to activist groups to fight this battle for you. Raise bloody, billy hell with your state reps, your governors, and your Congresscritters. I trust the SCOTUS to do the right thing as far as I can throw them.

Aside to Outkast: That's funny. When people from another country enter the US ILLEGALLY, you don't call them "criminals". You're their champion. Seems like you think people should "abide by the law" only if the law suits the communist/ socialist agenda being crammed down our throats by the left.

I just wanted to clarify why the health care bill is requiring the purchase of health insurance.

I do not agree the US is going about the reform the right way, so do not construe this post as supporting the current healthcare reform.

The private insurance companies are claiming in order to stay profitable and still have guaranteed coverage (everybody gets coverage regardless of pre-existing condition's, age etc.) everybody has to have mandatory insurance. The law specifies a certain minimum coverage , so paying $2.00 for Joe Blow not cover anything insurance will not work.

The reasoning is some healthy people will not get insurance until they are sick, then get coverage and cancel as soon as they are healthy again. I can understand this argument, however I do not think the current reform is the correct way to solve the healthcare issues in the US.

If any of you have ever tried to get individual coverage, you know what that process is like, I equate it to the Inquisition. The underwriter will interview you and ask you for details about the most minor and outdated stuff that occurred 10,15 20 years ago, most people don't even remember.

I cannot get individual insurance because of sleep apnea, a condition that basically costs the insurance company nothing as it is treated by a machine that costs about $300.00 and I replace around every 5-6 years.
I am insured by a "High Risk" insurance plan that the state contributes and runs through a private insurance company.

The laws for group health plans (generally the ones you get through your employer) already have regulations that disallow an employee being rejected from the group plan due to pre-existing condition, etc.

I do not know if the private insurance companies are telling the truth about the need for mandatory insurance in order to stay profitable, or if pre-existing condition issues are really that big of an issue for insurance companies as group policies already have restrictions against rejection for those conditions.

Lawmakers and private insurance companies are dead against a public option, as the companies see that as major competition. Most countries that have socialized medicine have a complete public system, and some allow some private insurance to gain some extra coverage or perks.

I don't have an answer, but I believe this private mandatory insurance, with no public option is not the answer.

I always get a kick out of all these people who dont want to pay for health insurance but expect to be treated when they roll into the ER. Theyre looking for a free ride while society boots the bill. Im all for scraping oboma care as long as the hospitals can refuse treatment if the patient lacks insurance, let the free market take care of them all the way to the morgue.

Healthcare is such a racket in the US. I have health insurance that I pay part of the cost and my former employer pays the other - I am retired. If I ever drop my coverage I cannot get it back again so I keep it for an emergency. I pay out-of-pocket for my healthcare in Mexico. A typical doctor visit costs about $2.50 in US dollars.

The Mexican people can have government healthcare for a very low cost that increases somewhat with age. As a Mexican resident I am eligible for the same coverage. At my age, 58, it would cost me about $250 US dollars per year. I do not use it as I have US health insurance which pays-off in Mexico also and would get me the best private luxury hospital care with cable TV, wi-fi, etc.

Do not for one minute believe US has superior healthcare than other places in the world, including Mexico. You are expected to believe that but knowing better I find it laughable.

When the bill is ruled unconstitutional will they refund the money and equally important - will they pay you interest on it? No. Funny how the IRS uses compounding interest rates higher than a pay day loan shop, yet when they make an error, legally are not required to pay you even prime.

Thanks for all the input so far. Yes I wasn't sure about the source either, and some good questions were raised here..."What does the IRS have to do with health care"???

According to this, we have 3 years...from signing.

whether the source is valid or not. it still brings up good questions, and thought & ideas.

how many people make $100 a day at their jobs? i don't so I couldnt afford that!

i do not like that people are being told they have to buy it! i feel that is wrong. partly because its expensive.

here in PA they just raised the low income insurance. from around $30 to somewhere around $160 a month.

most people who needed that low income insurance were upset because they weren't sure if they could afford the higher price. it also came with less coverage.

people abused the system and the state couldn't handle the cheaper price anymore.

i know around $160 isnt so bad, but when you don't have a lot of money it is.

i would love to see them try to fine me.
a lot of people would just get the cheapest possible just to avoid that.

ever since i heard of a tax for if you don't have it it has reminded me of the movie robin hood. if you don't pay it do they throw you in jail?

its just a crazy messed up situation.
