tell that to them it appears the only people who thinks that china doesn't own taiwan is taiwan themselves.

past arms sales seem to validate that thought hence they are seeking a better means of defense from mainland china.

Yeah, maybe Taiwan sees it that way but I'm sure the US sees it more along the lines of destablizing the region in order to ensure that China focuses a good portion of its assets on Taiwan instead of other targets.

Aim64C-
It's kind of like Britain trying to say that America belonged to the British Empire just prior to the war of 1812. China says it owns Taiwan. Taiwan already made it pretty clear that they are their own country. Of course, they also insist they are the real china... which - given their history, they are closer to the culture that was obliterated by Mao and the communist revolution in China.

No, actually it's not. Taiwan is ethnically Chinese just like the PRC. It's more like Quebec thinking it should be autonomous from Canada.

Well, damn - that means my house belongs, primarily, to the Germans - with some claim to be made by the remnants of the Cherokee and some Scottish.

Taiwan declared and maintains that they are independent of China. Ethnicity doesn't play much of a role.

The U.S. sees it as Taiwan is a much preferred trade partner than China, and is more ethically compatible than China. The only reason we are considering not selling them weapons is because China might actually go ape-# and start blockading or blowing up Taiwan - which would put us in direct conflict with China, because we're pretty well sided with Taiwan if it comes to blows.

And I'm sure we need to be fighting the whole damned Arab world plus the Chinese. While India would probably be more than willing to jump in and shoot at the Chinese - that would probably end up being rather similar to how we were "friends" with the Russians during World War II.

Of course - that's considering conventional war. A strategic nuclear war with China is so overwhelmingly in favor of the U.S. that, given our current commitment of forces, a preemptive strategic nuclear strike on China should be our recourse for any imminent military action by China against us or our interests.
