Wow no pressure here....lol
I am glad to have found this site that debates/discusses so many interesting topics, but I guess this is my chance to talk about me.
I have had an amazing last 6 months and I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones in life. We (my wife and kids) were given an opportunity to
become caretakers on a 100 acre farm on a small gulf island (pop 300 approx)
For animals we have beef cattle, ducks, peacocks, chickens, a lake with trout (resident & searun) and streams. The property is waterfront with a large
crescent bay & creek mouth, we have a late 18th century barn, early 1900's chapel, guest cabin, large shop & farm cottage.
The owner who for reasons I don't really want to divulge is unable to come out to the farm and will not be able to for quite some stretch of time.
They pay us a wage & provide us with cards/accounts for all farm purchases, 4X4 vehicles, boats, farm tractors/equipment etc.
I met my wife and oldest daughter 10 years ago, we have had 2 son's since. My wife and I clicked the first night we met and that night I knew she was
the one. We have had this dream of living off the land close to nature and talked about this dream for years with our family and friends to the point
of annoyance. I used to describe the perfect property for us to live this dream and it consisted of an acreage with a lake, streams, forest & ocean
bay. I described the grade of the land from the lake so that I could set up a water tank for electrical generation & water pressure and even had an
idea of the view of the mountains across the strait. We would eat from the land, lake and the sea and raise our children to learn survival skills
instead of how to be good little consumers.
Well as I already gave away, 6 months ago this vision manifested into reality for us, everything we have been talking about is here, even the cider
house and orchards (15 acres of every kind of fruit and nut treee). We are still letting it all sink in as its such a shock to go from a bad situation
to this. I am thankful to the universe for this place we are in and the beauty & life this land offers.
We have a huge garden planned and I built greenhouse boxes (didn't get the greenhouse repaired in time this year) that are full of hundreds of pots
of herbs and veggies for transplant to the garden later. The garden is about half an acre with an artesian spring bubbling into an underground cistern
(The water is from a large underground river system sourced back to the Olympic mountains).
We are living healthy and learning to be self sufficient. We both have talked about what is coming for years and now we are in a position to learn to
survive it. (Although a Tsunami could be a grave threat as we are in a location off Vancouver Island that is expecting a large quake, The Cottage
where we live is about 60' +/- above sea level).
My forum name I know does not seem to fit in here, it is a long story but results in this name being used on most of my online appearances.
I look forward to reading from all sides of many interesting & important topics, I wish to hone my critical thinking skills as well as learn new
skills. I hope someday I can contribute something new here but for now will quite happily read and comment on the revelations of others.
Cheers
