CIA Afghan 'black sites' replaced by gray areas

www.msnbc.msn.com

KABUL, Afghanistan — The CIA's infamous secret network of "black site" interrogation centers is gone. But suspected terrorists in Afghanistan are being held and interrogated for weeks at temporary sites, including one run by the elite special operations forces at Bagram Air Base, according to U.S. officials who revealed details of the detention network to The Associated Press.

Now, these "temporary sites" just aren't the same as the ones they had to close. After all, we still gotta' detain them terrorists, right?

The secrecy under which the U.S. runs that jail and about 20 others is noteworthy because of President Barack Obama's criticism of the old network of secret CIA prisons where interrogators sometimes used the harshest available methods, including the simulated drowning known as waterboarding.

Human rights advocates say the severest of the Bush-era interrogation methods are gone, but the conditions at the new interrogation sites still raise questions. Obama pledged when he took office that the United States would not torture anyone, but former detainees describe harsh treatment that some human rights groups claim borders on inhumane.

Well, that explains it, POTUS criticized those torture chambers and sadists' funhouse clubs so pledged to not torture anyone anymore. Problem is, it's kind of like closing down a brothel and letting the employees start up a new enterprise, a more respectable one like a massage parlor or an escort service, perhaps even a nightclub. Eventually it leads back to the same activity as before.

Still in place are the "degradation ceremonies" to soften-up the detainees for interrogation. So instead of water-boarding they are getting a softer dose of Bush Light. And now there are time limits on how long they can be detained, so these camps are "temporary" and not the full lifetime membership plan like before. Well, several years or lifetime, whichever came first.

So let me get this straight. You're saying that torture by any other name is still torture? I thought that if you changed names and locations it was a new business. Boy have I got a lot to learn.

(Sarcasm in support of your point, not mocking it)

Yeah, Obama never did anything. The military industrial complex still rolls along, all oiled and tuned up, just like it did with little Bushy.

This is about the only "change" Obama and his bankers made to torture:

True MSM propaganda

I mean how can you claim these secret camps are gone, but they are still there, if they are still there, then they are not gone, if they are gone, then they are not still there. Beautifully crafted propaganda, add "temporary" in the sentence and expect the world to close the eyes and forget about it, because 2 years later you gonna destroy one temporary torture camp, and replace it with another temporary torture camp.

Does it really make a difference, whether you torture someone in a house you rented, or in a house you have bought, it is still ...

I'm speechless.

A CIA that doesn't torture people is like a McDonalds that doesn't sell hamburgers.

I find it amusing how the whiter than white elite of America, the ruling class always scrambles trying to cover their asses, when their black bag boys (the CIA) do something that makes them look bad.

I'm surprised that the CIA is acting like they're concerned with how people perceive them.

Too little too late though, as already demonstrated by the responses above.
