It may not have the most romantic of names, but Asteroid 2010 SO16 could pursue Earth for anywhere between the next 120,000 to a million years.
And at a few hundred metres across, it is the largest space rock ever discovered so close to earth.

A horseshoe orbit? WTF!? Is that even possible?...

But, if it's new, how can they know anything about its orbit, and even say it is at its closest? Visible for decades on evening? How so?

This new object has too bizarre of an orbit for that orbit to be a product of Nature alone. The odds of such a natural, precisely fit orbit for a new object falling in from a former a former far different orbit are beyond, pardon the word, astronomical.

No one would predict such an orbit could happen except it did. And guess what, right here at this epoch of time when we keeping hearing the terms UFO and ETs almost every day. It isn't shaped like a monolith, but it has the same duty. It is a sign....

Its above you, no its below you, no its a horseshoe, but wait, a horseshoe isn't a complete orbit is it, *hit the linked thread above* and find out what they really mean by horseshoe. (And I thought only NASA lies, but NASA provides the truth you will see), to explain that 'horseshoe' writer's artistic license employed by the original link. It ain't no friggen horseshoe!

The "horseshoe" definition refers to the object's position relative to Earth. If you look at that diagram, imagine the asteroid approaching Earth on the lower, inner part of the horseshoe. In this region, the asteroid is slightly inside Earth's orbit, and travelling slightly faster than our planet. However, as it approaches, it crosses Earth's orbit (still trailing our planet by some margin), and starts to slow down. The asteroid starts to recede from Earth at this point, which equates with the lower, outer part of the horseshoe.

You have to remember that the diagram is attempting to explain a dynamic situation with a static picture. However, the real situation is that Earth and the asteroid are in constant motion. The horseshoe is NOT the shape of the asteroid's orbit!
