Japan grows a proto-eye

New research being published today in the journal Nature explains how they have managed to grow a mouse eye from stem cells, with the hope it will lead to treatments for human blindness.

I wonder what would happen if they could splice into existing functioning eyes adding 2 more eyes at other locations.

Interesting, can we have eyes in the back of our head if we want them soon?

Japan.. such a valuable country when it comes to scientific research.

Possibly if you could also create the neural pathways that your front two eyes have, connected to the back ones. Although our brain is based around the stereoscopic vision our species has evolved, so there would be some problems inherent in doubling the amount of eyes you have and their positioning. Like % of brain activity devoted to sight, and i would assume some pretty severe disorientation and discomfort from seeing in such a new perspective.

The possibilities of stem cells are amazing, and pretty comforting for speculating on the state of medical science in the future. Blindness...I could deal with the loss of other senses, but sight... Good to see there's some progress here.

However I reckon the brain would, with a little time, adapt. Just like it does when you lose an eye or become blind
