VIRUS WARNING

SAN FRANCISCO — Computer security firm Websense on Friday was warning that hackers have infected a huge number of websites with malicious code crafted to dupe Internet users. Hundreds of thousands of legitimate websites have been boobytrapped to redirect visitors to "lizamoon" addresses where they are greeted with bogus warnings that their computers have been compromised, according to Websense. The ruse is designed to frighten people into downloading and installing fake anti-virus software, referred to as "scare-ware," portrayed as a Windows Security Center. People who fall for the ploy, perhaps even paying for downloads, are actually installing malicious software that hackers can use to their advantage.

Yep I was a victim too. Don't know how they got me because I'm ultra careful, but the virus wouldn't let me on the internet. The bogus virus software tried to hold me to ransom demanding payment. I've just reinstalled windows - what a pain in the neck that was. Oh well, as it happens my computer is much much faster now I've reinstalled so I guess they inadvertently did me a favor.

This has happened in small cases, but never this big.

It's easy to get tricked if you don't use computers a lot, but if you work with computers these tactics don't stand a chance. It's easy to avoid, and if the popup/webpage forbids you to click any exit method, use the ctrl, alt delete and just close the browser itself.

I tried the Control Alt Delete but it had no effect. I used to work in the IT department of a national bank, I know computers really well. The virus got me was so well written. Back your files up guys. Create a restore point.
