So I was browsing some recent ATS topics and decided to Google earth the area of Ōkuma, Fukushima.. Now normally that wouldn't be thread worthy, but the fact that it says "Imagery Date: 3/18/2011" and yet, that's clearly not right, considering the destruction that's occurred in that region and what's displayed on Google earth. I took a screen-shot, see below =)

Any thoughts? It definitely struck me as a little weird.

Edit Note:
When I posted the picture it cut off most of it, so i'm adding the link in case you'd like to view the full image.

I looked at the image in your link. At the bottom you can see one of the reactors (#3?) damaged, but everything else does seem pretty intact.

I haven't used this before. Are the images always like that? Some parts look kind of like off, like a not well-done computer game.

The date on the bottom said the 18th also.

The reason the reactor looks like that is beyond me.. and yeah, it does look comp generated, weird stuff. If you scan around the area you'll also see cars and things that defintely shouldn't be there, almost as if the tsunami never happened.

I tried using satellite on mapquest but got "no data currently available" as I tried to zoom in.

But I can zoom in all the way on Los Angeles. Hmm....

Ever since I saw my house in the river according to Google Earth, I have thought it is rubbish.

Ugh, another one-line post.

Now it is three.

I just looked at it from Google maps and it looks beaten up but not too bad.I'm installing Google earth to see if there is a difference.

Okay so I just looked at the Google Earth- it showed nothing wrong in the area. I went back to Google maps and the Nuclear reactors were just fine when not 30 minutes before 2-3 looked caved in and poles were knocked down. Really Google what the heck are you doing?

Now Google earth is showing the destruction? I had the image up for 5 minutes and it switched on me....

I just checked my Google Earth links...imagery is dated 3/19/2011...reactors show damage corresponding to MSM reports.

Just north of the actual reactor complex shows a parking lot full of cars in a heap while further westward are parking lots looking rather orderly...Further north and south along the coastline, clear evidence of the devastation...a lot of the former green areas are now brown from mud or silt I'm guessing.

By no means am I an expert in these things, but it seems as if the tsunami took out trees and less substantial (structurally) buildings closest to the unprotetected shoreline before the surge began to be impeded by thicker vegetation and man-made infrastructure. I've heard estimates that the height of the initial wave was anywhere between 9 & 30 feet depending on how far away from the epicenter. I imagine that would also play an important role in the amount of upheaval discerned.
