Prime Minister Julia Gillard says Australian officials will do what they can to support an Australian writer feared detained in China.

Speaking to reporters in Perth on Thursday, Ms Gillard said there had been some "concern" for Dr Yang Hengjun after he couldn't be contacted.

Spy novelist and influential online commentator Yang Hengjun disappeared on Sunday shortly after calling a colleague from a Chinese airport to say he was being followed.

Friends feared he had been detained by Chinese authorities as part of their crackdown on political expression in the wake of the democratic uprisings sweeping the Middle East and north Africa.
