Challenge to all ATS Code Breakers

Calling all code crackers: The FBI needs your help.

On June 30, 1999, officers in St. Louis found the body of 41-year-old Ricky McCormick, who had been murdered and dumped in a field. The lone clues regarding the homicide were two encrypted notes found in McCormick's pants.

Now, investigators from the FBI’s Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit (CRRU) and the American Cryptogram Association are seeking the public’s help in breaking the encrypted code found in the notes on the body of the murdered Missouri man.

"We are really good at what we do," CRRU chief Dan Olson said in a statement. “But we could use some help with this one."

You do realize there are like a dozen threads on this already..

If you just do a search or look at the firehose you would see them.

We're gonna sell it if we arrive at a conclusion, right? We'll need some kind of moneys for retainer fees for all the lawyers we'll need when the FBI shows up in 5 years to arrest us for treason, only to take us to some fluffing bunker to decode some windtalked jibber-jabber and then set us loose with a cantene and a dream in the middle of the desert. If we aren't going to be paid, then no...I'm practically poor. And I hate the heat.

WLD in the note could be an acronym for welder
or welding.

ncBE might stand for Nuclear Controlled Biological
Elements which would make the 71, 74 and 75
mean elements in the periodic element table.

Parenthesis used as meaning steps as in making
or building something, maybe a device using
these elements in the periodic table.

All in all, a good way to build up a database of civilian decoders and their capabilities.

It was on slashdot i think monday, and there is at least 1 thread about it here i saw, might have to search for FBI code or something.

Personally, I'm curious as to why they would release this to the public, wouldn't the FBI have advanced code breakers and cypher crackers at their disposal? Are they honest in the fact that they don't really think it will solve much?

Could this just be a sick joke by the killer, no code at all?

I glanced at it quickly and noticed what looks like a key at the top, and some segments are in brackets. Leading me to assume, if there is actually a coded message, most of the text is gibberish and only specific segments can be decoded.

bah answered my own questions be actually READING the Ops quote lol. Fascinating they've been working on this since 99 with no results at all? Have they even entertained the idea it's not a code at all, just something to confuse and distract?

Leaving a note, even like this, on a murder victim is awful risky, they can tell a lot about you from your writing, maybe even enough to build a profile.

that's the 1 i know of, not sure if it's the first or most active. Didn't come as the top search hit, I used "fbi" and "code" and it was a few results down on the first page, easy to miss.
